Whilst supportive supervision is important, the students are encouraged to use their own initiative. The placement may be a stand-alone project or may form part of a larger project; however, it must be achievable within a 2-3 week period.
 
Who are the students?
We select able students who have just finished their first year of A levels, and are about to make their university choices. STEM Learning is committed to addressing the socioeconomic gap among talented students and so the focus of the scheme is on recruiting students from traditional widening participation backgrounds i.e. they are from low income backgrounds or will be the first in their
family to attend university. 
 
The students are reimbursed their travel expenses and in most cases also paid a weekly allowance from the Nuffield Foundation and therefore there is no direct cost implication.

On Thursday, 27th July 2023, the London Interdisciplinary Biosciences Consortium will be hosting an Employers Showcase Event for our students interested in networking with a diverse range of employers regarding internships, graduate pathways and research collaboration.

We are delighted to invite doctoral students from our consortium partners research programmes to join on the day if they wish!

Although many of the companies and organisations in attendance will be from a biological, medical or health focus there will also be larger sectors represented and many interested in attracting students with transferable skills, particularly in the areas of data analysis and coding. There will also be the opportunity to book onto talks and bite sized workshops exploring broad employment sectors and generic employability skills.

PhD course on “Pandemics, markets and power”

The Global Health Politics research group at the Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM) is organizing a four-day PhD course on “Pandemics, markets and power” in Oslo from 19th June to 22nd June 2023. 

We hope to gather PhD students from around the globe to discuss with us how markets shape pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. Travel and accommodation scholarships are available to a limited number of students from outside of Norway.

This seminar will cover types of harassment and misconduct, guidance on how to make disclosures both formally and informally, and discussion on how to make the workplace as safe and inclusive as possible to all. This 40-minute talk will be followed by a Q&A plus time to network afterwards. We encourage students/staff of all genders and levels of seniority to attend either online or in-person.

Queen Mary's PGR Student Induction is open to all beginning PhD students. Induction runs three times a year, once at the beginning of each semester. It is a chance for the Doctoral College to welcome you formally. This annual conference offers PhD students and early career researchers from across the UK the opportunity to share their experiences with each other. This year these are set to include former BBC journalist Kurt Barling, Northern Ireland Assembly Member Dr Patricia O’Lynn MLA, and historian and podcaster Helen Carr, with further speakers soon to be announced.

2nd floor North Reading Room, Mile End Library – temporary closure for decoration and re-carpeting

As part of the Mile End Library Transformation Project, 2nd Floor North Reading Room will close from 20th June 2022, to allow contractors to undertake decoration and re-carpeting.  We estimate that this work will take about four months.  A fetching service will operate in order to support access to the collections on this floor; for access to study and research spaces, please use the 1st floor or ground floor at Mile End Library, or one of our other learning and research spaces on Mile End Campus.

IGGI PhD Studentship

The IGGI programme has an open position for a Home UK / EU Settled status PhD studentship within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Intelligent Games and Game Intelligence (IGGI), which is the world's largest PhD research programme aimed at games. Postgraduate Pedagogies is an online open-access journal devoted to articulating and sharing the perspectives of graduate teaching assistants (GTAs). We publish texts that convey the experiences, reflections, and analyses of current and recent graduate teaching assistants, those who work with GTAs, and those who support them. The journal publishes a variety of contributions, including Reflective Essays, Opinion Pieces, Case Studies, Book Reviews, and Technology Reviews.  

An opportunity to contribute to the design of the journal has come about, and so we are reaching out to Doctoral Schools and Graduate Colleges throughout the UK in search of a piece of refreshing design or artwork to dress the forthcoming volume of our journal.

Science Presenter PhD internship opportunity at the Royal Institution

The Royal Institution are looking for a PhD student to take on an internship with us as a Science Presenter Intern in our Young Scientist Centre for a 3-month placement to gain experience of presenting to a group of young people in an engaging, educational environment and to receive training in science communication. The internship is from May to July 2022, with some flexibility.

The successful intern will:

  • Present hands-on science workshops to young people in the LYSC.
  • Research and develop hands-on science experiments for Ri social media content.
  • Work with the YSC team to develop content for other Ri activities.

I am embarking on my doctoral thesis which is seeking to understand the motivations of British Bangladeshi/Bangladeshi female students that pursue postgraduate research (PGR)/doctoral study, and what perceptions or factors influenced this decision. I also intend to explore how this experience is implicated by students’ race, ethnicity as well as other intersectional parts of their identity. In gauging this, and the potential barriers that inhibit a fulfilling experience and ultimately success, the research will also explore how other Bangladeshi female students can be encouraged and supported into pursuing an academic route.

This commitment builds on a 10-year history of implementing the Concordat at The University, evidenced by our HR Excellence in Research Award (awarded in 2012). Signatory status commits us to an annual action planning and updating cycle that is informed by researchers and their managers through our Concordat Implementation Group, and the approval of our Senior Executive Team and Council, it was published on our Concordat website.

To commemorate this, we have put together a programme of talks from external speakers and Queen Mary staff about Postdoc careers, culture, and about how to maximise your time while at Queen Mary.

This is an online event intended for postdoctoral researchers (including research fellows) and the academic staff members who manage and mentor them.

PhD students who are considering a postdoctoral position at Queen Mary are also welcome to attend.

LISS DTP invites applications for seven ESRC-funded Post-Doctoral Fellowships (PDFs) to commence from 1st October 2022 to be held at King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London, or Imperial College London. These fellowships provide an opportunity for those in the immediate postdoctoral stage of their career to consolidate their PhD through developing publications, networks, as well as research and professional skills.
Fellowships will provide funding for up to one year full-time, or up to two years part-time to cover the fellow’s salary plus up to £10,000 of additional costs (eg travel, conference attendance, training, fieldwork, mentoring time, etc).

It is a chance for the Doctoral College to welcome you formally. Visually Mediated Research: Using Visual Methods in the Social Sciences

Every year, the Cumberland Lodge Fellowship gives 10 doctoral students the opportunity to get involved in our work; bringing together people from different backgrounds, ages, and perspectives, to address the causes and effects of social division and work towards more open and inclusive societies.

During the two-year scheme, Fellows have the chance to network with senior figures in public life and to participate in, or help to lead, discussions that ultimately inform recommendations for practical action and policy change. Fellows also have opportunities to take part in Programme events outside their own academic disciplines. In doing so, they will gain experience in working collaboratively; engaging in cross-disciplinary discussion; public engagement and facilitation at events; networking; writing for a range of different audiences; and enjoy access to a £300 Personal Development Grant.

Commonwealth Split Site Scholarships 2022

Applications are open for Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships for PhD candidates from low and middle-income Commonwealth countries to spend 12 months at a UK university as part of their doctoral studies in their home country.
The scholarships are for study starting in the UK in September/October 2022 and are aimed at high-quality graduates whose proposed research has a developmental focus and who have the potential to deliver impact in their home countries. To be eligible, candidates must be registered for a PhD at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country by the time their scholarship is confirmed. There must also be an institutional or departmental link between the candidate’s home university and their proposed UK university/Department.

New members can collect their physical membership card at the Welcome Desk on arrival for their booking.

The British Library decided for the first time to offer the annual Doctoral Open Days as a series of free online webinars. Building on the success of these, and to make our Open Days more easily accessible to PhD students nationally, our 2022 events series will again be largely delivered online. The British Library will explain the practicalities of using the Library and accessing its resources in a series of interactive webinars. This online offer will be complemented by pre-recorded content and an invitation to explore the St Pancras site at the end of the series.

Are you passionate about science? Public engagement? Pubs? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be interested in helping to run Pint of Science festival in Queen Mary in 2022!

What is Pint of Science? 
 
Pint of Science is an international science festival that usually happens annually over three evenings in May. From 9th to 11th May 2022, science researchers will be making their way from the lab to the pub to share their research stories with the public over a nice cold pint.

Last year, Pint of Science 2021 had to take place online on YouTube due the pandemic but it will come back to pubs in 2022! In previous years, our fantastic festival in Queen Mary saw ~500 attendees and 26 speakers sharing a pint at over 12 events, with highlights including a talk from Mars Society President, Robert Zubrin, and a night hosted by BBC science correspondent, Tom Feilden, for the mental health research charity, MQ.

The festival doesn’t happen by itself; it needs a team of enthusiastic and inventive volunteers to make it happen. That’s where you might come in… We need volunteers to run the festival in London! Roles require part-time commitment from November 2021 – May 2022 and include event manager, communications manager and web manager.

Annually, from 1 June to 31 August, IIASA hosts up to 50 doctoral students from around the world in its Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP).

Early-Career Research Opportunity at the Turing

The Turing-RSS lab, supporting The Joint Biosecurity Centre, has an open call for a number of early-career researchers to work across the lab and contribute to the existing research tasks, which include spatial-temporal modelling of Covid-19 incidence and prevalence, understanding the impact of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions, and more broadly work on research questions of priority to policy makers in the UK’s response to the pandemic.

Data Study Groups are intensive, collaborative hackathons which bring together organisations from industry, government, and the third sector, with talented multi-disciplinary researchers from academia. Organisations act as Challenge Owners, providing real-world problems to be tackled by researchers.

The events provide a fantastic opportunity for early career researchers to rapidly develop their data science skills using real-world data. The event also offers participants the chance to forge new networks for future research projects and build links within The Alan Turing Institute and industry. PhDs, postdocs, those with equivalent non-traditional qualifications/experience and other early career researchers can apply.

Year 3 PhD Cohort Day (Employability) – 22 September 2020

The third Doctoral Cohort Day focuses on helping students make plans for life beyond the PhD, whether they decide to follow a career within or outside of academia. This will be taking place online and will comprise of three sessions:

  • A bird’s eye view of the current labour market and how it relates to researchers
  • Understanding your transferable skills as a PhD and how to broaden your job search
  • Followed by a choice of 2 sessions:
    • 6 time-saving LinkedIn secrets for researchers
    • How to ace your online interview

A further session will cover wellbeing during the final stages of the PhD. The session will look at the process of finishing the PhD whilst trying to maintain some work life balance. This session will also look at how to combat barriers to completion such as perfectionism and imposter complex.Both sessions are now open for registration on the course booking website with course codes DC300 and DC301 respectively.

PhD Support Group resumes online

The Advice and Counselling Service and the Researcher Development team will offer Support Groups for PhD students for a third year in 2020-21. The groups aim to provide a safe, confidential space in which PhD students can share and support each other with personal, emotional and relationship issues that can obstruct their progress.
 
Some themes that could be explored in the Support Group are, among others: isolation, finding it hard to maintain confidence or motivation, worries about career prospects, the relationship with supervisors, stress, anxiety or other worries.
 
Applications are now open for any of the three groups scheduled to take place during 2020-2021. Each PhD support group will run for 8 weekly sessions on Thursdays from 11.00am to 12.00pm on MS Teams, in the first instance, with a maximum of 8 participants in each group.

UK/Catalonia 2-year fully-paid fellowships
18 August 2020

Tecniospring INDUSTRY (www.tecniospring.com) offers 2-year employment contracts to experienced researchers in order to develop an applied research project with focus on technology transfer.

Worldwide researchers may

  • join any Catalan organisation for 2 years (Incoming fellowship); or
  • join any UK/worldwide organisation during the 1st year, followed by a return phase to a Catalan organisation during the 2nd year (Outgoing+Return fellowship).

With a budget of 11 million EUR and co-funded by the H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions, Tecniospring INDUSTRY will award 72 fellowships for the 2019-2024 period.

The upcoming call’s deadline is 16 November 2020 and it will fund projects starting between March and September 2021.

Researcher Development’s popular* Let’s Write Online Writing Retreats will continue throughout August and September and will form part of our programme in the coming academic year.

*Over 72% of those who have attended them since we began running them in April have said they would recommend them to a colleague (that rises to 86% since we modified the format in June). Many participants have commented that they are “useful in helping them focus on [their] writing”, and that the encouragement they receive from their peers makes their writing process more enjoyable!

The 2020 Queen Mary 3 Minute Thesis competition (3MT) will take place online on 4 June 2020 at 10:30am. 3MT is an international research communication competition, in which PhD students have three minutes to tell a non-specialist audience about their research and results. The Queen Mary winner goes on to compete against other PhD students from across the UK and could win a £3k public engagement grant from UKRI. Our finalists represent all three Faculties.

This year’s competition will be hosted on Zoom, please visit bit.ly/QMUL-3MT-2020 to register to attend. Finalists will compete for First and Second place prizes and there will be a people’s choice winner. The First-place winner will also go on to represent QMUL in the national semi-final competition.

A recording of our Round Table: Digital Museums as immersive experiential spaces

Museums of all sizes have been developing digital experiences since the late 1980s, and simultaneously digitising their records and artefacts to evolve their online presence. Although the digital engagement of museums varies considerably, given the resources and time needed to establish and maintain this digital presence, it is important to consider its value and outcomes. With a strong policy impetus to make museums more immersive and to engage with the digital, at a time of restricted funding, the desirability and practicalities of this approach needs to be discussed by the sector, along with other questions such as striking the balance between visitor experience, curation and scholarship.

This roundtable brought together researchers, museum professionals, digital artists and producers in a “Chatham House rules” discussion to reflect on the points above, and to consider how higher education and the museum sector can better collaborate in this area for greater mutual advantage and societal engagement and impacts.

The outcomes of this roundtable featuring provocations by Irini Papadimitriou (Creative Director, FutureEverything), Nicholas Lambert (Director of Research, Ravensbourne University), Rob Sherman (digital artist), Dan Shorten (Guildhall School of Music & Drama), Alice Rosenbaum (Digital Manager, Freud Museum), Sophie Leighton (Curator, Freud Museum) will inform the programme of the TCCE Digital Creativity Forum over the next year.

Student Mental Health: Responding to the Crisis

It will come as no surprise that we were left with no choice but to postpone the Student Mental Health: Responding to the Crisis that was due to be held in London on the 5th May 2020. 

We have now consulted with all the speakers and sponsors and we are delighted to inform you that the event has now been scheduled in for the 6th October 2020 at the Ambassadors Hotel, Bloomsbury in London. We will include in the programme mental health issues caused by the covid-19 virus.

Delegates will explore why more students are turning to unconventional incomes like gambling and sex work during their studies, how the university experience can compound cultural and environmental conditions that lead students to access and supply drugs; and discussing how cross-institutional co-operation as well as legislative review of attitudes towards information sharing could prevent students reaching a point of crisis.

opportunity for dynamic debate, reflection and criticism. With a strong interdisciplinary focus, we welcome articles, interviews, visual essays, reports from conferences and festivals. We want to explore new critical frameworks for the scholarship of creating a scene.

Scene invites submissions for its special issue on: Creative and Performing Arts Health and Wellbeing. Arts in health programmes across the country, indeed across the world, are using diverse and dynamic disciplines in a variety of health, care and community settings for expressive, restorative, educational and therapeutic purposes. Some work preventively, some enhance recovery, others improve the quality of life for people with long-term or terminal conditions. The creative arts help make sense of our human condition, making room for the heart and soul to be heard. The Alan Turing Institute is seeking to commission a literature review to inform future research directions in the area of low-shot learning for structured data. The review should be up to 5,000 words in length and should summarise relevant academic literature, identify knowledge gaps and highlight opportunities for future work. It should be written for an interested non-specialist audience and focus on the current state of the art for combining or augmenting low-shot learning with structured knowledge such as ontologies. It is important to understand the amount of data required to train these models and how well they perform on different distributions form their training data.

The Festival of Communities is returning for its fifth year on the weekend of 13-14 June, taking place in Stepney Green Park on the Saturday and the Queen Mary Mile End Campus on the Sunday.

It is a collaboration between Queen Mary and local-based organisations, and over 3,500 visitors joined us over the weekend last year. The activities at the festival are designed for local families to learn something new or try something different. These varied activities range from hands-on experiments, sharing stories and views, interacting with demonstrations and trying out fun new things.  Watch what went on last year here.

Queen Mary are looking for staff and students to take part by showcasing research, teaching, and other Queen Mary projects by running a hands-on activity, demonstration, stall, exhibit or in other ways – open to fun and creative ideas!

To support creating new or adapting existing activities to showcase at the festival, Queen Mary projects can apply for up to £500 of funding through the Centre for Public Engagement, and the CPE team are on hand to offer advice on your engagement activity design through Festival advice sessions and a hands-on engagement training session.

The 12th Annual Web Science Conference (WebSci20) in Southampton, UK is soliciting proposals for workshops and tutorials addressing the way Web Science research can illuminate key contemporary issues and global challenges.

Workshops should reflect the multidisciplinary nature of Web Science.

The tutorials could cover a wide variety of Web Science approaches and methods, including but not limited to techniques for data collection, processing, and analysis, as well as substantive interpretation, best practices, and ethics.

The 2020 GradFest will take place between 20-30 April and we are offering 15 awards of up to £500 to PhD students who propose and host an event. The event can be anything you like, eg seminar, performance, workshop, training session, open mic night, etc. Past events included painting with bees, a photo exhibition of PhD students' research, mindfulness sessions, yoga and film screenings (you can view last year's events here).

Year 2 PhD Cohort Day – 20 February 2020

Bookings are now open for our Year 2 PhD cohort day.

This full day workshop will take place on 20th February at Mile End.  The morning session will cover research impact and communicating research, the afternoon session will cover maintaining momentum and looking after your wellbeing during the PhD. 

 

This event is open to all PhD students, but is particularly designed for PhD students in their second year – catering will be provided throughout the day and skills points are available for attendees.

Interdisciplinary PhD Seminars for the Economic Humanities

CAPITAL FORMS is a semester-long Economic Humanities training project for PhD students. Through guided reading and discussion, a range of critical methodologies will be given to students.

The monthly reading group will cover a range of economic themes which will provide effective strategies on managing projects that cross into economics and political economy.

Do you know anyone seeking casual work? Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry are looking to add to the pool of unscripted simulated patients that we use for events such as OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations) and clinical teaching. The OSCEs are designed for medical students to demonstrate to an examiner the correct way to perform a clinical examination on a simulated patient.

The Alan Turing Institute is open for Expressions of Interest to produce literature reviews. This may be suitable for PhD students and/or early career researchers. This call is open to all – i.e. not restricted to those with a Turing affiliation.

 Each review should be up to 5,000 words in length

  • Should summarise relevant academic and policy literature, identify knowledge gaps and highlight opportunities for future work.
  • Be written for an interested non-specialist audience and should set out the key questions in the field, the empirical challenges to answering these questions, the approaches existing work has taken, and the results found.
  • The reviews should be international in scope.

Applications to take part in The Alan Turing Institute’s next Data Study Group event are now open.

Turing Data Study Groups are intensive five-day collaborative hackathons in which researchers work on real-world challenges and data from industry, government and the third sector. The events offer is a fantastic opportunity for early career researchers, PhDs and postdocs to rapidly develop their data science skills using real-world data. The event also offers participants the chance to forge new networks for future research projects and build Turing and industry links. Challenges have been put forward by WWF, Dstl, The National Archives, SenSat and Agile Datum.

The Centre for Public Engagement Small Grants is a monthly funding scheme that provides grants of up to £1000 to enable Queen Mary staff and students the opportunity to deliver small-scale projects that engage the public with University research, teaching, or core business.
