Students' Union message for Ramadan 2022

The weekend marked the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, observed by Muslims around the world, including here at Queen Mary. It is a time when people come together to remember their faith and self-reflect to appreciate what we have in the world, to strengthen the bonds of kinship and to increase acts of charity for the benefit of others. Many also use Ramadan as an opportunity to make positive changes in their lives and develop habits that reinforce their spiritual beliefs.

Ramadan is also known as the month of fasting, with fasting being one of the five pillars of Islam. Fasting involves abstaining from food and drink, as well as smoking and intimate relations with one's spouse between the hours of sunrise and sunset. An Iftar meal marks the end of that day's fasting each evening.

For those observing Ramadan, studying can become more of a challenge. We've put together some tips about how you can study better and look after your wellbeing, whilst also concentrating on your faith in our handy Ramadan blog feature.

We're also delighted to confirm that the Multi-Faith Centre at Mile End will be open later for the first part of Ramadan for Night Prayers (Taraweeh). The Centre will be open from 9am-11pm Monday to Friday until Thursday 14 April 2022. We've also partnered with Residential Life and Queen Mary Islamic Life to offer those students living in halls an Iftar meal for free, all residents are welcome, regardless of whether you are fasting. The Village Shop is also offering 10% off halal sandwiches, wraps and baguettes throughout the entire month.

Ramadan Mubarak!
