Interested in sharing your knowledge of teaching & learning, mentoring SBM students and inspiring the new cohort of undergraduate students joining SBM in September? Do you have or are working towards your PgCAP or HE Academy Fellowship?

We are looking for a PhD student to act as a mentor support to 7 current SBM undergraduates with BTEC qualifications to deliver a 1 week transition programme for a targeted group of new students joining in September. We're looking for a PhD student who is passionate about supporting & developing students, sharing knowledge regarding teaching & learning and suggest innovative ways of delivering content.

This is an Access funded pilot programme for incoming SBM first undergraduates from selected schools & colleges

What is a Transition Programme? 

A transition programme is a course where students get a head start on university experience, such as skills, assessments and online systems and make new friends from their new cohort, ahead of starting their course the following week.
We are aiming for the participants of the transition programme to:

  1. Gain a positive first-hand experience of student life and a university environment
  2. Become familiar with learning & teaching approaches in HE
  3. Engage with students from a variety of social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds to establish relationships and form mutual support networks

The programme will cover a variety of subjects already researched by a QConsult team in Spring, including quantitative skills, essay writing, exam preparation and Harvard referencing. Social events and activity to develop a sense of belonging, build resilience and develop career aims will be delivered by the team.

Commitment

Part time from Monday 10 August - Friday 4 September 2020 (Team training with Tracy Bussoli
Delivering the Programme: Monday 7 September - Friday 11 September 2020 - 9-5pm schedule TBC

What we're looking for in your statement:

  • Have or working towards your PgCAP or HE Academy Fellowship
  • Passion for supporting students from BTEC qualifications, BAME & low income backgrounds to achieve academic success
  • Keen to share your knowledge & know -how in teaching & learning & academic skills with innovative ideas
  • Strong communication - particularly interpersonal/relationship building/influencing with individuals & groups
  • Team working and problem solving
  • Strong IT skills, especially online communication tools - Blackboard Collaborate
