Life Beyond the PhD 2022 – Cumberland Lodge conference

There is still time for doctoral students to book their places for our ‘Life Beyond the PhD’ conference, which is being held from Monday 15th August to Friday 19th August 2022 at Cumberland Lodge.

This annual conference offers PhD students and early career researchers from across the UK the opportunity to share their experiences with each other. We focus on communication, public engagement, and interdisciplinary working, through a series of skills sessions, a group project, and with the help of guest speakers. This year these are set to include former BBC journalist Kurt Barling, Northern Ireland Assembly Member Dr Patricia O’Lynn MLA, and historian and podcaster Helen Carr, with further speakers soon to be announced.

Sessions include:

  • presentation skills and writing for non-academic audiences
  • sharing research with non-specialists
  • CV writing skills
  • collaboration skills to optimise social impact.

This unique event presents the opportunity to explore the social value of PhDs, and aims to develop long-lasting support networks across traditional, institutional, and disciplinary boundaries.

The conference, held in our fantastic facility in Windsor Great Park, also provides an inclusive environment for doctoral students to exchange experiences, practices, and aspirations.

Delivery of our conference programme is subsidised by our charitable funds, as part of our work to nurture students and young people to become future thought leaders, and to help keep the costs to a minimum for participants. Tickets for this event include four nights of accommodation in our former royal residence, along with all meals, and are priced as follows:

Single occupancy room with en-suite facilities: £425
Shared occupancy room with en-suite facilities: £315 per person

Places at this event are filling up quickly, and expressions of interest in attending can be made via our website at: www.cumberlandlodge.ac.uk/whats-on/life-beyond-phd-2022
