Second Year Cohort Day: Understanding the impact of your research

The next Year 2 PhD Cohort Day will take place 23rd February 2021. This Doctoral College event is for all 2nd year PhD students. Anybody in year 3 who didn’t get to attend this previously is of course also welcome to join.

The 2021 Cohort Day will run remotely in two separate sessions. It is recommended that students attend both sessions.

  1. DC200 -2nd Year PhD Cohort day: Understanding the impact of your research - will cover information on research impact and effective research communication and run in the morning.
  2. DC204 - 2nd Year PhD Cohort day: Wellbeing Session - Keeping up the Momentum - will cover wellbeing, how to maintain momentum, and work-life-balance in PhD studies and run in the afternoon.

This event gives PhD students the opportunity to find out about ‘impact’ and what it means to researchers, the college and the Research Councils, as well as to consider the impact or potential impact of their own research and how this can be communicated to others. The successful contemporary researcher must be able to identify the various ways that their research is disseminated within academia and also how their research can inform public policy, practitioners, behaviors and organizations etc.

The mid-point of the doctorate can sometimes be challenging; you may have had a few setbacks, your research may be changing direction or feel uncertain, and you may find that you’re experiencing a dip in your motivation. This session aims to help keep you going with your research, by reflecting on your journey so far and identifying what may hinder or help your progress. We’ll discuss unhelpful beliefs, feelings or behaviours that doctoral students often experience (eg imposter syndrome, procrastination, stress) and give you some tips to combat or manage them.

To register for the Year 2 PhD Cohort Day please go to www.cpdbookings.qmul.ac.uk and search for course codes DC200 and DC204.
