Arrangements for Monday 19th September 2022

The State Funeral for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will take place on Monday 19 September 2022. This day is the start of Welcome Week for our new students, and this page will set out what you can expect on the day and throughout the rest of the week. A number of the activities we’re offering will be rescheduled and further information will be added as plans are confirmed, so please check back regularly.

Funeral Screenings

Should you wish, you will be able to watch television coverage of the State Funeral on our campuses. Screenings will be available from 9am-1pm at Peston Lecture Theatre (Graduate Centre) on Mile End campus, Perrin Lecture Theatre on Whitechapel campus, and Willoughby Lecture Theatre at our Charterhouse Square campus.

Student Wellbeing

The sad news of The Queen’s passing has affected us all in different ways – the Queen Mary Advice and Counselling Service is open and available to support you, and our multi-faith Chaplaincy offers a space for quiet reflection on our campuses.

University Facilities

The day of the State Funeral will be a national bank holiday, to allow individuals and organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate Her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning. A limited number of Queen Mary facilities and services will remain open to support you as a new student, but any Welcome activities you may have expected will be rescheduled.

All University libraries will remain open. Mile End Library will be open 24 hours from 19 September, and Whitechapel Library will be open from 8am to midnight. From 10am to 6pm, a small team of Library staff will be available in both Mile End and Whitechapel to answer enquiries and assist with accessing online self-tours.

Any requests for IT support on Monday 19 September can be raised via either LiveChat or by calling +44 020 7882 8888 – both LiveChat and phones are available 24/7.

The Curve Restaurant on Mile End campus will be open and serving food and drinks throughout the day, and Nucleus Café on Whitechapel campus will open from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

Lawn games will be available in Library Square on the Mile End campus from 10am - 4pm.
