Looking after yourself
As an Advisor from time to time you may encounter material that find distressing. You are not expected to offer students in-depth specialist support, to know all of the answers to the questions that your advisees ask of you, or to be trained to handle all situations, but having good working knowledge of the support services that are available is helpful.
- Schools have a support network in place to help support members of staff and students.

Although you might not be the person that can directly offer the support a student might need, it’s important that you listen carefully to their concerns, communicate interest and a willingness to help them, and then signpost appropriately. Giving your tutees up to date information can avoid them becoming over dependant on you and help you to maintain clear boundaries and importantly, look after your own wellbeing.
