Profile

Deborah Darling has spent over two decades teaching in international contexts at various levels of education. At Queen Mary University of London, she is a part-time Lecturer in Applied Linguistics. She is also an Associate Tutor at the University of Warwick, where she supervises MA students for the Department of Education Studies, and an Honorary Research Associate at the Institute of Cornish Studies (Penryn, University of Exeter). She previously lectured in English for academic and professional purposes, sociolinguistics and multicultural/lingual education at the University of Helsinki.

Teaching

Since first training to teach in 2003, Deborah Darling has taught English in various contexts to include private language schools, further and community education colleges, and higher education institutions (since 2008) across the UK and internationally. She completed her teacher training in Australia (CELTA), Spain (CELTYL) and Britain (DELTA).

Since 2020, she has been teaching applied/sociolinguistics and education modules. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and has completed courses in university pedagogy.

Research

Research Interests:

Deborah Darling’s research interests include discourse analysis, interculturality, internationalisation, language ideologies, language policy, language teaching and plurilingual pedagogies. She has incorporated these interests into her published work on the use of different languages in higher education.

She is currently collaborating on a study on social-emotional wellbeing in relation to hybrid learning in the Ghanian context for which she received a scholarship. This is a sub-project of the Coco-Ed Project led by the University of Helsinki in collaboration with the Åbo Akademi University (Finland) and the University of the Cape Coast (Ghana).

As an Honorary Research Associate at the Institute of Cornish Studies, she is planning a corpus-based project that focuses on Cornish language ideologies in the British print media.

She is a regular reviewer for journals that are aligned with her research interests, for example the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development and Language and Intercultural Communication.
