Aims and Objectives

This module aims to provide you with an overview of the key topics and issues in the study of Business and Management, including International Management.   It examines the political, economic and legal context in which business operates, the structure of firms and organizations, as well as Human Resource Management, Corporate Social Responsibility and Diversity and Inclusion.   The module adopts a predominantly UK perspective, but also looks briefly at the international situation as this is crucial for understanding the business context in a global world.

You have a 2 hour lecture and a 2 hour seminar every week.  There are set texts to read each week in preparation for the seminars and you are expected to engage with this process.  In addition you should read independently to identify relevant management issues arising in recent media articles, papers and documents.

You are also taken on trips to places such as The Bank of England and Wimbledon, to experience the practical elements of Business:

Learning Outcomes

 At the end of the module, you should be able to:

  • demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the key issues related to Business and Management in the domestic UK and international world.
  • political, economic and legal context in which business operates, people and resources, the structure of firms and organizations, management and leadership, marketing, strategic management and development, organisation management and control, organisational change, human resource management, motivation, business ethics, and globalization;
  • identify relevant management issues arising in recent media articles, papers and documents;
  • engage effectively in discussion by making pertinent and constructive comments on relevant topics;
  • produce detailed and coherent written communication about complex management phenomena in a style appropriate to the topic;
  • pursue independent learning with minimal guidance, using a full range of resources;
  • develop, explain and apply research methods to a research question
  • show the ability to analyse and comment on management in an informed and coherent manner in both written work and seminar discussions to the level that will lead to potential success on a postgraduate degree in Business Management, or similar programme

Assessment

You will write a 1,000 word essay and a 2,000 word group report.  In addition you will be assessed on your oral participation in seminars throughout the semester and through a presentation.  You must read and prepare well for seminars, and you will need to show in discussions that you have been reading the course materials and thinking about them.
