Contemporary Issues in Business and Management IFP/IFJ6010
Aims and Objectives
This module aims to build on IFP/IFJ6009 by developing your analytical and problem solving skills through the examination of challenging contemporary issues within Business. You will analyse and comment on Business issues in essays, reports and presentations to the level that will lead to potential success on a range of master degree programmes in the School of Business and Management. You will also be taken on external visits to encourage the application of theoretical knowledge in real life situations.
Module structure
You have a 2 hour lecture and a 2 hour seminar every week. You are expected to read the core textbooks weekly and to read independently to identify relevant management issues arising in recent media articles, papers and documents.
You are also taken on trips to places such as Coca Cola and City Hall, to experience the practical elements of Business:
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the module, you should be able to:
- Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the key issues related to Business and Management in the domestic UK and international world.
- Political, economic and legal context in which business operates, people and resources, the structure of firms and organizations, management and leadership, marketing, strategic management and development, organisation management and control, organisational communication, human resource management, motivation, business ethics, and globalization;
- Identify relevant management issues arising in recent media articles, papers and documents;
- Engage effectively in discussion by making pertinent and constructive comments on relevant topics;
- Produce detailed and coherent written communication about complex management phenomena in a style appropriate to the topic;
- Pursue independent learning with minimal guidance, using a full range of resources;
- Develop, explain and apply research methods to a research question
- Show the ability to analyse and comment on management in an informed and coherent manner in both written work and seminar discussions to the level that will lead to potential success on a postgraduate degree in Business Management, or similar programme

Assessment
You will write a 1,000 word report and give an oral presentation. You will also sit a final exam lasting 2 hours in which you will be expected to answer 2 questions.
