Finance (IFP/ IFJ6008)

Overview

This module will introduce you to the basic principles of finance and investment. There will be an introduction to the theory of financial markets and their regulation, and a brief look at the concept of market efficiency. However, most of the focus will be concentrated on the relationship between risk and return, the principles behind portfolio evaluation, the behaviour of asset prices and the role of institutions and trading systems in modern financial markets. 

Module Structure

You will have a two hour lecture each week, plus a one hour seminar. 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Develop a working understanding of the theory of consumer choice that underlies the demand-side of the market;
  • Appreciate the importance of asymmetric information in a financial environment;
  • Apply simple mathematical models in a financial market context and show awareness of the limitations of these models;
  • Demonstrate ability to apply finance theory in a range of economic problems
  • Communicate analysis of theory application effectively;
  • Identify policy options and assess the likelihood they would improve economic growth, efficiency and equity;
  • Demonstrate ability to define and analyze economic problems using algebraic and statistical methods;
  • Acquire and apply knowledge;
  • Develop a basic understanding of research methodology including literature surveys, data gathering, data analysis and their relationship to policy-making;
  • Identify the benefits and costs of a global economy.

 Aims

The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to economics and teachyou how to use basic economic models and skills to analyse real life economics problems.  

 Assessment

You will be assessed by exam:

  • Mid-term test (20%)
  • End-of-term test (20%)
  • Final exam (60%)
