Wills and Probate workshop brings legal education into the East London community

In April 2026, undergraduate law students from the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre delivered a Wills and Probate workshop at St Hilda’s community centre, supporting Queen Mary’s commitment to sharing knowledge and expertise with communities across East London.

Four undergraduate students facilitated the interactive Public Legal Education and Street Law session, which was attended by around 20 local residents. The workshop explored the law around wills and probate, including what happens when someone dies without leaving a will, helping to make an area of law that can often seem complicated or inaccessible easier to understand.

The session gave local residents an opportunity to learn more about an important area of law in an informal and accessible setting, while also giving Queen Mary students valuable experience of communicating legal information clearly to members of the public.

The workshop forms part of the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre’s wider Public Legal Education programme, through which students work with schools, community organisations and other groups, with a focus within the Tower Hamlets area,  to improve understanding of the law and help people feel more confident navigating legal issues, with plans to deliver further community workshops during this academic year.
