Step one: Application, Deadlines and Housing Criteria for Students

For the academic year 2024-25, we make an accommodation guarantee offer to all our first-year undergraduate and foundation students*. If you meet the following criteria, we guarantee to offer you a room in a Queen Mary hall of residence, or with one of our partner providers:

  • You must be a new, full-time registered student at Queen Mary, who has not lived in a Queen Mary residence before
  • You must firmly accept your offer to study at Queen Mary and apply for accommodation by 30 June
  • You should be prepared to sign an agreement for a full academic year, at least for the period of September to June

If you do not meet the published deadline, then applications will be considered on date of housing application submission basis (with priority given to those living outside of Greater London).

*Please note this guarantee does not apply for students who are applying for couples or family accommodation.

All new postgraduate applicants are eligible for accommodation in QMUL halls, or with one of our partner providers, subject to meeting the following conditions.

For the academic year 2024-25, if you meet the following criteria, we guarantee to offer you a room in a Queen Mary hall of residence*, or with one of our partner providers:

  • You must be a new, full-time registered student at Queen Mary, who has not lived in a Queen Mary residence before
  • You must firmly accept your offer to study at QMUL on a postgraduate programme and apply for accommodation by the deadline 30 June of your year of entry
  • You have not lived in a Queen Mary residence before (i.e. on another course of study)
  • You are prepared to sign a residential licence agreement for a full academic year (this condition does not apply to mid-year starters)

If you do not meet the published deadline, then applications will be considered on date of housing application submission basis (with priority given to those living outside of Greater London).

*Please note this guarantee does not apply for students who are applying for couples or family accommodation.

All new applicants studying on a January start course can apply for accommodation in Queen Mary halls, or with one of our partner providers, subject to meeting the following conditions:

  • You have firmly accepted a place to study at Queen Mary University of London
  • You have not lived in a Queen Mary residence before (i.e. on another course of study)

If you have applied for a programme commencing in January 2024, and would like to stay in University accommodation during that programme, you will need to make a housing application using the application for the ‘2023-24 academic year’. You will then be required to complete an application for 2024-25 for the final term of your course (September-January).

There are no guarantees you will be offered a place in accommodation, offers are made subject to availability.

For the academic year 2024-25, we make an accommodation guarantee offer to all our first-year undergraduate and foundation students*.   • You must be a new, full-time registered student at Queen Mary, who has not lived in a Queen Mary residence before

  • You should be prepared to sign an agreement for a full academic year, at least for the period of September to June

If you do not meet the published deadline, then applications will be considered on date of housing application submission basis (with priority given to those living outside of Greater London).

*Please note this guarantee does not apply for students who are applying for couples or family accommodation.

For the academic year 2024-25, all new International Foundation and Pre-Masters applicants are guaranteed accommodation in Queen Mary*, or with one of our partner providers (this is reviewed annually), subject to meeting the following conditions:

  • You have firmly accepted a place to study at Queen Mary University of London
  • You have applied for accommodation by the deadline of 30 June of your year of entry (or 31 October if you are a January starter)
  • You have not lived in a Queen Mary residence before (i.e. on another course of study)
  • You are prepared to sign a residential licence agreement for a full academic year (this condition does not apply to January starters)

If you do not meet the published deadline, then applications will be considered on date of housing application submission basis (with priority given to those living outside of Greater London).

*Please note this guarantee does not apply for students who are applying for couples or family accommodation.

All new Study Abroad and Associate applicants can apply for accommodation in QMUL halls, or with one of our partner providers, subject to meeting the following conditions:

  • You have firmly accepted a place to study at Queen Mary University of London
  • You have not lived in a Queen Mary residence before (i.e. on another course of study)
  • You are prepared to sign a residential licence agreement for a full academic year (this condition does not apply to single semester applicants)

There are no guarantees you will be offered a place in accommodation, offers are made subject to availability. The earlier you apply the better your chances will be.

For the academic year 2024-25, we make an accommodation guarantee offer to all our new degree apprenticeship students. If you meet the following criteria, we guarantee to offer you a room in a Queen Mary hall of residence, or with one of our partner providers:

  • You must be a new, full-time registered student at Queen Mary, who has not lived in a Queen Mary residence before
  • You must firmly accept your offer to study at Queen Mary and apply for accommodation by 30 June
  • You should be prepared to sign an agreement for a full academic year, at least for the period of September to June
  • If you require housing during the summer vacation for academic purposes, you be contacted by us next Spring to make a summer application.

If you do not meet the published deadline, then applications will be considered on date of housing application submission basis (with priority given to those living outside of Greater London).

For the academic year 2024-25, all new care experienced students and students without family contact are guaranteed accommodation in Queen Mary halls*, or with one of our partner providers, subject to meeting the following conditions:

  • You have firmly accepted a place on an undergraduate programme
  • You have applied for accommodation by the deadline of 30 June of your year of entry
  • You have not lived in a Queen Mary residence before (i.e. on another course of study)
  • You are prepared to sign a residential licence agreement for a full academic year

If you do not meet the published deadline, then applications will be considered on date of housing application submission basis (with priority given to those living outside of Greater London).

Queen Mary University of London provides a range of services to support care leavers.

*Please note this guarantee does not apply for students who are applying for couples or family accommodation.

We reserve a significant number of places for our applicants who join us through clearing in either Queen Mary halls or with our preferred partner provider AA4S.

In order to submit your housing application you must be placed at Queen Mary, i.e. you must be holding an unconditional firm (UF) offer.

To apply for housing you will need to use both the username and password provided to you when you applied to study at Queen Mary. You can access the online housing portal via the Accommodation tile on MySIS.

Allocations will be made for any available rooms in strict date order of application.

Please note: Priority will be given to applicants who do not have a home address in Greater London.

Only applicants who have accepted a firm offer to study at Queen Mary University of London are sent login details to apply for housing, therefore you will be unable to meet the housing deadline of 30 June. Despite missing the deadline we strongly encourage you to apply for accommodation as soon as you are able. To apply for housing you will need to use both the username and password provided to you when you applied to study at Queen Mary. You can also access the online housing portal via the Accommodation tile on MySIS.

Once you have applied you will automatically be placed onto the halls waiting list for any last minute cancellations, either before term starts or during the term. Priority will be given to applicants living furthest away. If it looks unlikely we will be able to make you an offer in halls, or if you feel it is untenable to remain on the waiting list beyond the start of term, we will provide you with lots of support and guidance on seeking .

Our website also provides information on short stay options, hotels, hostels, privately built halls and homestay opportunities. Please don’t be discouraged, we are here to help and ease your transition into university life.

Queen Mary is currently planning to offer either online or face to face versions of the Pre-Sessional this summer.

If you have also applied for a place to study on one of our Degree programmes for the 2024-25 year, and would like to stay in University accommodation during that programme, you will need to make a housing application using the application for the ‘2024-25 academic year’. To apply for housing you will need to use both the username and password provided to you when you applied to study at Queen Mary. You can also access the online housing portal via the Accommodation tile on MySIS.

Applications for 2023-24 academic year are open and if you plan to study in person this summer, you will also need to submit an application for the academic session 2023-24. Full details on accommodation types and costs can be found here.

This policy is in place to support students under the age of 18 with the transition from home to university and it’s recommended that the policy is read through with parents or guardians so that they can understand the support available whilst at Queen Mary.

Unfortunately, European Exchange students are not eligible for Queen Mary University of London housing. It may be possible to offer halls from Term 2, subject to availability. Comprehensive advice can be given in finding alternative accommodation.

Returning students no longer have any priority for accommodation, unless they have extenuating circumstances (supported by the University's Disability and Dyslexia Service)

Any surplus of rooms or mid-term vacancies, once our commitment to all new students has been met, will be offered to the following groups who have completed their full degree at Queen Mary in the following order:

  • New applicants who have studied on a previous course that have had no previous halls at Queen Mary
  • Final year applicants on a 4 or 5 year degree that have had no previous halls
  • Final year applicants on a 3 year degree that have had no previous halls at Queen Mary
  • Final year applicants on a 4 or 5 year degree that have had 1 previous year (or part year) in halls at Queen Mary
  • Final year applicants on a 3 year degree that have had 1 previous year (or part year) in halls at Queen Mary
  • Second year applicants

Submission date of application will be taken into consideration within each category, when waiting lists are compiled.

Students who have not fulfilled their financial obligations to the University or have not abided by the disciplinary rules and regulations of the University will not be offered accommodation

  • New Undergraduate and SEFP students: Return your application no later than 30 June of the year of entry. You may submit an application after this date, but it is highly unlikely you will be made an offer, due to the popularity of Queen Mary Halls.
  • New Postgraduate students: Return your application no later than 30 June of the year of entry. You may submit an application after this date, but it is highly unlikely you will be made an offer, due to the popularity of Queen Mary Halls.
  • Study Abroad/Pre-Masters/International Foundation Programme in Social Sciences and Humanities and the International SEFP: The accommodation application deadline is 30 June for first semester or full year students and 31 October for second semester applicants. You may submit an application after this date, but it is highly unlikely you will be made an offer, due to the popularity of Queen Mary Halls.
  • European Exchange students: Unfortunately, European Exchange students are not eligible for University housing. On request, help can be given in finding private sector accommodation on our page.

The online housing application process opens in March each year. Due to the popularity of Queen Mary Halls we strongly recommend that you apply as soon as you are able. To apply for housing you will need to use both the username and password provided to you when you applied to study at Queen Mary. You can also access the online housing portal via the Accommodation tile on MySIS. Room allocations are made on a 'first come, first serve' basis, after all other eligibility criteria has been met.

Please note: if you are holding a conditional offer at Queen Mary University of London please do not wait until you receive your examination results before completing and submitting your housing application.

If you have extenuating circumstances or a medical/disability that you wish to be considered when submitting your application please submit any supporting literature, which is relevant to your case, within 14 days of making your application.

In the case of a medical condition you will need to provide medical evidence signed and dated within three months of the date of your application. This evidence has to be written in English and provided by a doctor or other medical professional, such as a specialist. The evidence must be submitted within 14 days of making your application. Unless you are a first year international student applying to study at Queen Mary this evidence must come from a medical practitioner based in the UK. All applications with the necessary supporting literature will then be passed to the Disability and Dyslexia Service for an assessment. For further information go to Disability and Dyslexia Service

Any non-medical extenuating circumstances will be referred to the Housing Advisory Review Panel for consideration. You will be required to send an email outlining your extenuating circumstances to housingservices@qmul.ac.uk and any supporting literature should be scanned and sent with this email. Your request will be acknowledged and you will be informed of the Panel outcome by email.
