Configuring Windows Vista and Windows 7 for eduroam

Note: To configure your device for wireless eduroam in the most secure manner, please use the eduroam Configuration Assistance Tool (CAT) – see Wi-Fi

Configuring a wired connection manually.

  • Plug your PC into the network port.
  • In Control Panel under Network Connections you will see a Local Area Connection. This connection is to a default LAN, which forms a stepping stone for setting up your eduroam connection.
  • Right-click on the connection and open Properties.
    • On the Authentication tab, ensure that Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network is checked.
    • Uncheck the boxes for Authenticate as computer... and Authenticate as guest...
    • If present, tick the box to remember information for subsequent connections and enter your credentials.
  • Double click on the interface to trigger an attempt to validate the connection. A warning will appear in the bottom right of your screen, informing you that additional information is required. Ignore the warning and install the network certificate.

Installing the Certificate

  • Download certificates by clicking on the following links in turn:
    QMUL Root CA [1KB]
  • To install the certificates right-click on the downloaded certificates in turn and select Install Certificate, then follow the steps in the certificate installation wizard.
  • Choose Automatically select the certificate store based on the type of certificate when prompted.

Enter Credentials

  • Return to Network Connections, and double click on the connection, then click on the warning message that appears. When prompted for your username, enter your college username followed with @qmul.ac.uk. For example, ab012345@qmul.ac.uk.

Your connection will display a new IP address, indicating that you have been connected to eduroam.
