Background

Professor Ahmed completed his Ph.D. in Economics in two years at Edinburgh Napier University

 Prior to QMGPI, he spent 15 years (2004-2019) at the University of Sussex, Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) (1st science and policy think tank in the UK) where he established and led Sussex’s most successful postgraduate programme MSc International Management.

In the period 2009-2011, Professor Ahmed led the Government of Abu Dhabi in Knowledge Management Framework (Musharaka)

Has played an active leadership advisory role for several major public and private institutions.

Having worked in the field of international engagement and leadership in Higher Education Institutes for almost 25 years, Professor Ahmed is considered to be a transformative leader with a track record and repute in the UK and across the world particularly Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Strategic focus  

Provide consistent and consolidated advice to the Commission services regarding the “Activities of International Cooperation” of the Capacities Specific Programme.  Advise the Commission on strategy, relevant objectives and scientific and technological priorities, and the topics on which proposals are to be invited.  Provide an overview and advice on international cooperation across the whole FP7 and work to enrich deliberations on “specific cooperation actions with third countries” of the Cooperation Programme.  More specifically, among others advise on what the interactions should be between the Capacities programme and the themes in the Cooperation programme in terms of “Specific co-operation actions”.   Provide suggestions regarding policy issues relevant to international cooperation in the Capacities programme. Provide a written input to the Commission on a yearly basis, to use in the preparation of the annual work programme

Research

Research Interests:

The role of science, technology and innovation in achieving sustainable development (SD) with topics relating to public health; nutrition and food; digital transformation (DT); knowledge management (KM); Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D); Artificial Intelligence (AI); Data Science (DS)

Globalisation and competitiveness. This covers topics relating to strategic management; leadership; government macroeconomic and public policies; entrepreneurship; marketing and commercialisation of technological products and innovation; knowledge and technology transfer and management; productivity gap analysis and modelling; SD; industry and sustainability; and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Publications

Professor Ahmed is published widely covering various disciplines and has produced more than 120 publications, including 39 books and numerous articles in international peer-reviewed journals, books, conferences proceedings and working papers all rated as world leading and internationally recognised.
