Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Trauma Group holds its Inaugural Away Day and Conference

The multidisciplinary OMFS Trauma Group recently held its inaugural Away Day at The Royal Society. The event was funded through a grant from QMUL’s Enhancing Research & Innovation Culture (ERIC) fund and organised by Dr Sharan Sidhu, Institute of Dentistry. Professor Sir Mark Caulfield, VP for Health, in his Opening Address, thanked the speakers for their contribution and the OMFS team for their dedication to service and the amazing and fantastic care patients received.

Professor Nikolaos Donos awarded the prestigious IADR Distinguished Scientist in Research in Periodontal Disease Award

Professor Donos, Director of Research and Head of Clinical Research at the Institute of Dentistry, was presented with the award - the highest international award in the field of Periodontology - at the 102nd General Session and Exhibition of the International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) in New Orleans this week.

Passing of Professor Emeritus Newell W Johnson

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Professor Newell Johnson who was a Professor of Oral Pathology and Head for Department at the (then) London Hospital Medical College for over a decade, until his appointment as the Director of the Medical Research Council Dental Research Unit and Nuffield Research Professor of Dental Sciences, at the Royal College of Surgeons England in the mid-1980s.

In a national or global crisis, a healthcare system and its workforce should have the flexibility and resilience to deliver the required level of care for all its constituents. The current COVID-19 pandemic necessitated rapid decisions and early redeployment of staff to deliver essential healthcare. Having the dental team as part of this strategy would increase availability of healthcare workers

Dr Ali Nankali is a Clinical Senior Lecturer (Adult Oral Health) in the Centre for Teaching and Innovation at the Institute of Dentistry. Ali tells us about setting up UKDentalCourses - a new global platform for dental events and courses which is also providing opportunites for our staff and students to work and showcase their research. He also shares his love of making things from scratch, including making synthetic tongues for students to practice on.

New research finds virus-like particles that control mouth cancer

Muy-Teck Teh and colleagues from the Institute of Dentistry had research published this week in the journal Molecular Cancer: https://doi.org/10.1186/s12943-018-0846-5 which provides new insights into how cancer cells send out signals to control surrounding normal cells and metastasise.

In this Q&A, Dr. Teh explains the significance of the research and how it might lead to new non-invasive tests for mouth cancer.
