Centre for Commercial Law Studies

Our vision

Queen Mary students looking out at Canary WarfCCLS was established over 40 years ago to create an environment where practising commercial lawyers and academics can meet, exchange ideas, and, in so doing, foster academic excellence.

By bringing together different perspectives, we can create better outcomes for commercial practices and economic development, which in turn benefit students, citizens, businesses and nations. Through collaboration, CCLS engages in cutting-edge research across all aspects of commercial law, in areas such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence and patents, financial regulation and access to medicine. This research impacts the development of policy, law and regulation at a national, regional and international level, to which our students will be able to make a meaningful contribution.

CCLS’ - those four letters do represent a lot to me – they are part of personal and professional formation. CCLS was a place where I was given academic knowledge and where I met some very important people – then, fellow students, now personal friends, clients, and business partners.
— Cassio Mosse, Intellectual Property Law LLM, 2015

Together, our faculty, students and alumni are shaping the future of commercial law and helping us achieve the previously unthinkable.

CCLS’s vision is based around three overarching principles:

• An international and comparative perspective
• Close collaboration with a range of different stakeholders
• A multidisciplinary approach to developing new knowledge

Our vision for more CCLS bursaries and scholarships.
