Zeynep Ilayda Gurcum (Commercial and Corporate Law LLM, 2023)

Happy to share that I’ve completed my LLM in Commercial and Corporate Law at Queen Mary University of London and have been awarded with distinction for my dissertation titled: “Who’s the Weakest Link? Cyber Security in International Arbitration.”

The past year in London was an incredible journey with my brilliant colleagues, many of whom I am privileged to call my friends now. Immensely grateful to my family and friends for supporting me along the way!

Nilufer Firik (Laws LLM, 2023)

I am very honoured to announce my graduation with distinction from the Technology, Media and Telecommunications law LLM at Queen Mary University of London. This two-year journey was not without challenges, and I am very grateful for the knowledge and experience gained as well as the encounters I have made through this process.

I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to pursue my work as a lawyer in a law firm in Paris all while attending the Technology, Media and Telecommunications law LLM at the same time, thanks to the excellent distance learning programme offered by Queen Mary. What a great experience that allowed me to acquire detailed knowledge in a fascinating field!

Elmukashfi Majzoob (Commercial Law LLM, 2023)

Undoubtedly, the value of education is immeasurable, offering both tangible and intangible advantages. After many years of planning and persistent effort, I secured the necessary funding to pursue my LLM at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary, University of London . Despite numerous distractions over the years, my singular focus remained fixed on this goal.

Upon arriving in the UK, my aspirations expanded beyond academic pursuits; I sought to make friendships with students from diverse backgrounds and immerse myself in varied cultures. My study at CCLS extended beyond theoretical learning; actively participating in the qLegal Legal Advisory Programme granted me invaluable practical experience. Through this programme, offering pro bono advice to start-ups supervised by qualified solicitors, I honed my interviewing and drafting skills significantly.

Completing my LLM in Commercial and Corporate Law with distinction has been an unforgettable journey. My time at QMUL and CCLS has left an indelible mark on me and will be cherished throughout my life. I am confident that in the coming years, I will translate these learnings into practical contributions back in my homeland, Sudan.

Stefan Danojević (International Dispute Resolution LLM, 2023)

To new challenges that lie ahead!

Mousam Sharma (Commercial and Corporate Law LLM, 2023)

Cheers to the completion of my LLM at Queen Mary University of London, where I received a merit grade in Commercial and Corporate Law. Many difficulties and triumphs have helped me grow intellectually and personally over the last year.
The experience of studying law abroad has been particularly rewarding. Adapting to a new legal framework and incorporating other opinions into the classroom offered personal growth opportunities at every turn. The multicultural atmosphere at Queen Mary has given me a new perspective on the transnational intricacies of corporate and commercial law as well as legal knowledge.
My LLM has given me a deep understanding of legal and financial functioning of M&A, cross-border insolvencies, financial market trends, preparing me to face the ever-changing worldwide legal landscape. I'm excited to use this information in my future work and contribute to the evolving legal field.
Special thanks to everyone who has been a part of this incredible journey. Here's to new beginnings and continued growth!

Sohini Goswami (Intellectual Property Law LLM, 2023)

Extremely elated to share with you that I have finally graduated from Queen Mary University of London with a degree in Master of Laws (LLM) in Intellectual Property, under the Department of Centre for Commercial Law Studies. This journey would not have been possible without my family's support, especially my father, who went out of his way to ensure no dream of mine was unfulfilled. I walked into this university with a lot of hope and naivety.  However, this journey was definitely beyond my expectations, for which I have to firstly, thank my immensely gifted professors and, secondly my batchmates who helped me and lent me a shoulder every step of the way, and finally my friends, who became my family here in this big, cold city. Looking back, I see a girl who saw dreams way beyond her means, and somehow the universe conspired to be on her side because she believed, she could be the only one to change her life's narrative. Hence, I am going to remember this journey as a testament to the fact, that you never know what you are capable of until you give it a shot.

Forever grateful to you Queen Mary University of London.

Patrícia Garcia (Criminal Justice LLM, 2023)

I have officially graduated Queen Mary University of London, having received my LLM diploma in the Criminal field with Distinction honours.

I am also very grateful to have been attributed the Criminal Justice Law Award for best student in the specialism, the Sir Roy Goode Award for best final-year student at the University, and the Principal’s Prize for outstanding academic achievement, including the work developed in the Criminal Law Modules and my research on Money Laundering for the final dissertation.

I am deeply thankful to all Professors and QMUL staff for their support and professional dedication. Studying at QMUL was the most enriching experience, from the multicultural environment of the university to the dynamic atmosphere of each lecture.

To all my colleagues in the Criminal Justice LLM I address the biggest thank you. This academic year has shown me new perspectives on the financial crime world, and I'll certainly leave London as a better lawyer because of all of you. It was an honour to be a part of this unique cohort with such rich backgrounds, so many jurisdictions and different legal professions. As a student, as a colleague, and as a course representative, I will never forget what I learned from listening to your experiences.

To all the amazing friendships London has surprised me with, know that I'm missing you already. Sometimes in the people that seem most different from us, we find the most in common. The same fears, the same dreams. We may cook different food, but we have the same joy when sharing it. We may have different religions, but we have the same respect towards each other. We may have different habits, but we question to learn and never to judge. I am forever grateful for crossing your path.

As caps and gowns go off, the only path to take is onwards. But the teachings and experiences shall remain vividly present.

Thank you QMUL.

Vitoria Alves (Intellectual Property LLM, 2023)

I've already shared that I've completed my LLM in Intellectual Property at Queen Mary University of London but being able to return to London and celebrate this achievement with an incredible ceremony and the added bonus of seeing friends from all corners of the world has a special flavour.
I'm so grateful for an incredible journey, exceptional professors and friendships that will last a lifetime - not to mention the family and friends who were by my side throughout the process. I'm also very grateful to the Vitória of years and years ago who built her dream of living and studying abroad - and the Vitória of the following years who persisted in her dreams until she was finally able to realise them.
May the next ones come! It's only the beginning.

Jacqueline Waihenya (International Dispute Resolution LLM, 2023)

I bid adieu to a season charged with intellectual rigour, challenge and engagement with a measure of nostalgia as I have been given the power to read Comparative & International Dispute Resolution LLM by Queen Mary University of London

I remain forever indebted to the Faculty, Classmates and the amazing army of student advisors who supported and assisted in navigating the many intricacies of the QMUL community and norms.

To my family, friends and colleagues I have not the words to sufficiently express my gratitude for your understanding especially when I squirrelled myself away in the rigours of this great endeavour.

By God's grace I graduate within days of clocking my Golden Jubilee of 50 years around the sun and in this very brand new 2024.

En avante toute

Viraj Chhelavda (Intellectual Property Law LLM, 2023)

On January 11, 2024, I had the privilege of walking across the stage, donning a cap and gown to officially mark the culmination of an incredible journey - my graduation ceremony.

Completing my Master’s degree with Distinction in a foreign land has been nothing short of surreal. It's hard to believe that a year has already passed since I embarked on this incredible journey in one of the world's most vibrant cities. From immersing myself in the rich academic environment to engaging with some of the brightest minds in the field, every day has been a learning experience.

I have had the privilege to be the recipient of the INTA Foundation first prize award for my LL.M. dissertation titled, “Gender Disparity in Intellectual Property: Examining the Advancement of Female Contributors and Practitioners in the Field”. I am thankful to the pro-bono legal clinic qLegal, where I had the chance to organize various workshops for our clients and curate videos aimed at spreading awareness about Intellectual Property. Lastly, as the course representative of my batch, it’s been a wonderful journey liaising between the student community and the staff.

Today, as I reflect on this milestone, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride. Standing at this juncture, I eagerly anticipate the next phase of my journey. I look forward to connecting with like-minded individuals, exploring collaborative opportunities, and making meaningful contributions to the field of law as I transition into the professional realm!

Studying in London was my goal and I am beyond ecstatic to have pursued the same, having graduated with a Distinction in Technology Media and Telecommunications Laws from QMUL. The past one year in the UK honed not just my professional skills but also numerous life skills which brought me out of my comfort zones and challenged my imposter syndrome inside out. I am thrilled to announce that I am now working as an entertainment lawyer, spearheading the OTT/Digital Media division in one of India's leading media production companies. It is a testament to the brilliance of QMUL education that my goals are getting reflected in my current profile. Thank you for the beautiful memories in one of the most beautiful cities of the world!

It was an honour to work with and learn from him. I’d like to thank him for his continued support and guidance throughout my LLM journey and the rest of my academic career.

I am also honoured to receive the Laws Evershed Prize from Prof Johanna Gibson. The Fashion IP Module was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my degree, and I enjoyed studying it while admiring Professor Gibson's teaching style. I’d like to thank her for being a role model and for her constant support.

During my time as a qLegal extern, providing legal support to Orbio Earth (YC S23) for six months, I gained valuable insight into startups and the legal industry. My special thanks to the incredible qLegal team for their hard work and support, and to Orbio Earth for creating such a friendly working environment and trusting me with their IP.

As a course representative, I was thrilled to be shortlisted for the collaboration award with my amazing teammate Nicholas Edwards. I appreciate his hard work and creative ideas for all the events we hosted together, including our course rep Instagram account.

After graduating in September, I joined qLegal as a project coordinator for the Future of Law Programme. I am proud to be a part of a strong team of seven women. Special thanks to Eliza Platts-Mills and Karen Watton for everything they have taught me, their incredible support, and professionalism. There is still much to learn from them for my future teaching career.

Last but not least, I would like to express my gratitude to my family, friends, and mentors who have consistently supported me throughout this journey. A special thank you to my advisor and former lecturer, Hüseyin Can Aksoy, for his guidance from the start.

Here's to new beginnings!
