Foundation in Technical analysis

This course of lectures is aimed at giving students an understanding of how technical analysis is used to pick up trends and predict turning points in the financial markets. It will explain how different types of analysis can be applied to different markets. The lecturers all work in the markets.

Meet the lecturers

  • Stephen Hoad is a trader and technical analyst who founded The Stop Hunter, a financial markets training company in 2015.
  • Clive Lambert is the Founder and Director of Futurestechs, one of the UK’s leading independent technical analysis providers, established in 2000.
  • Axel Rudolph is senior Market Analyst, IG Group. He was previously Director of Technical Analysis at Commerzbank and former Chairman of the STA.
  • Murray Gunn is Head of Research for Elliott Wave International’s Global Market Perspective. Previously, Murray was Head of Technical Analysis with HSBC Bank.

Course Structure:

  • Week 1: Financial Market Psychology and the Technical Approach
  • Week 2: Psychology and Application of Support and Resistance and Candlestick Charts
  • Week 3: Additional Information from Moving Averages, Momentum and Sentiment Indicators
  • Week 4: Cycles, Dow Theory and the Elliott Wave Principle
  • Week 5: Assessment


Foundation in technical analysis is one of several optional modules offered to postgraduate students by the School of Economics and Finance at Queen Mary University of London.
