Hot Topic Lecture November 2023

On 16th November 2023, the School of Economics and Finance held its third Hot Topics Lecture aimed at alumni, focusing on Real Estate: Trends and Developments. Professor George Skiadopoulos warmly welcomed attendees, who had the privilege of hearing from two distinguished speakers: Dr. Roman Šustek, Associate Professor at the School of Economics and Finance, and Panos Koliousis, Director of Commercial Real Estate Finance at CitiBank . The event drew over 170 registrations from our international network of alumni and was well-attended, with 50 individuals joining for the session.

The first speaker, Dr. Roman Šustek delivered a presentation on Global House Prices since 1950: Many countries have witnessed sharp appreciation in house prices in the past years but the tide seems to be turning. Until recently many commentators were claiming house prices can only go up. The talk will take a long-term look at house prices in a number of countries to provide a perspective on what are the general properties of house prices and what are the likely factors shaping their dynamics.

The second speaker, Panos Koliousis then continued the discussion on Trends and state of play in the UK commercial real estate market: The UK commercial real estate sector is dynamic, evolving and one of the key leading markets globally. In recent years, several notable trends have emerged, influencing commercial real estate investment strategies and reshaping the landscape of the occupational commercial real estate market. Inflation, interest rates, Covid, Brexit and sustainability targets are among the challenges which require market participants to adapt. In our talk we will explore how these trends impact and transform the commercial real estate market.
