Our new academic leadership programmes are designed to develop, empower and support academic leaders across the University.

New for 2023 - Educational Leadership Development programmes

These new programme have been created to develop, empower and support our educational leaders across the University in achieving our 2030 Strategy. You will find details of the programmes for Programme Directors and Directors of Education below. Sessions for Module Organisers and Heads of School will follow.

Programme overview - Programme Directors and Directors of Education

The programme for Programme Directors and Directors of Education includes four core units, which are covered at different levels for the relevant role.

Unit 1. Understanding your role and our Queen Mary strategy in the HE landscape

  1. Understand your role and the expectations
  2. Define the Queen Mary context and the 2030 Strategy
  3. Identify and understand the sector and industry drivers relevant to your role.
  4. Recognise your role’s challenges and opportunities for educational leadership

Unit 2. Growing and applying your personal leadership skills

  1. Enhance and apply an individual, inclusive and effective leadership style
  2. Develop your leadership presence to build confidence and inspiration in others
  3. Embed inclusive leadership practices in the context of your role, lead on inclusive practices across your area and those you lead
  4. Examine decision making techniques and practice conflict resolution

Unit 3. Delivering your educational vision

  1. Develop a compelling educational leadership vision and inspiring followership in your context
  2. Embed engagement, innovation, and entrepreneurship within the context of your role
  3. Lead the delivery of strategy to deliver academic excellence
  4. Understand and apply financial management skills and practices relevant to your role
  5. Embed and lead on effective, impactful programme design for your area

Unit 4. Creating academic reputation and building a high-performance culture

  1. Grow our academic reputation, influence, and impact
  2. Foster a world-class approach and a high-performance academic culture
  3. Create and lead successful strategic partnerships (industry, NHS, third sector)
  4. Build your career in leadership and succession planning

Dates

Programme Directors - Our first cohort of Programme Directors will begin in June 2023 and run to May 2024. There will be a range of workshops and events throughout the year. The launch event will take place on Monday 19 June from 3-5pm. Potential participants should, please, hold this date in their calendar.

Directors of Education - Our first cohort of Directors of Education will begin in June 2023 and will run to May 2024. There will be a range of workshops and events throughout the year. The launch event will take place on Tuesday 20 June from 9-11am. Potential participants should, please, hold this date in their calendar.

We are now inviting nominations for our first cohorts of Programme Directors and Directors of Education. If you are a Head of School that would like to nominate a Programme Director or Director of Education, please use the form. If you are interested in the programme, please speak with your Head of School about being nominated.

Nominations close on 31 May 2023.

  • Educational leadership peer network and forum
  • Online leadership toolkit for any time support
  • Leadership coaching
