This Academic Leadership Development programme is an interactive programme of training, workshops and leadership development groups, designed specifically for our Heads of School.

Our first cohort for Heads of School concluded in March 2024. Dates for the next cohort will be released in due course.

Unit 1

Your role and the Queen Mary strategy in the higher education landscape

  • Understanding the Head of School role 
  • Defining the Queen Mary context and 2030 strategy 
  • Identifying and understand the sector drivers relevant to your role
  • An introduction to emotional intelligence and how it connects with leadership

Unit 2

Delivering your academic vision

  • Develop a compelling academic leadership vision
  • Enhance your individual leadership style and leadership presence to build confidence and inspiration in others
  • Lead the embedding of inclusive leadership practices

Unit 3

Operating as a senior leader within the structures of Queen Mary

  • Working as a leader within the Queen Mary governance structure
  • Understanding and embedding the role descriptors of those you lead
  • Embedding and supporting development of and through policy for Queen Mary
  • Understand and apply financial management skills and practices

Unit 4

Creating academic reputation and building a healthy performance culture

  • Grow the school's/institute's academic reputation, influence and impact
  • Foster a world-class approach and a healthy performance and academic culture across the school/institute
  • Build your career in leadership and succession planning for the Head of School role
