Directors of Education

This Academic Leadership Development programme is an interactive programme of training, action learning sets and project work, designed specifically for our Directors of Education.

The current cohort for Directors of Education will conclude in September 2024 with the next cohort starting later this year - we will publish the dates once confirmed.

Content Overview

Each unit consists of a day-long session and a half-day workshop. Please scroll down for dates and times for upcoming cohorts.

Unit 1

Understanding your role and our Queen Mary strategy in the HE landscape

In Unit 1 we will cover a range of topics to support you in getting the most from your role as a leader whilst delivering on our shared QM vision. Topics include:

  • Your role as a Director of Education
  • Sector awareness
  • Our QMUL Strategy
  • Understanding policy and governance 

Unit 2

Growing and applying your personal leadership skills to lead across the school for education

In Unit 2 we will explore your personal leadership values and style to uncover your strengths and what energises you. We will also cover a range of skills development sessions to support you on your journey. Topics include:

  • Leadership values and the DoE role
  • Influencing and communicating
  • Self-awareness
  • Decision making

Unit 3

Delivering your educational leadership vision for your school

In Unit 3 we will focus your leadership vision for your school and the challenges and opportunities that may influence its delivery. Topics include:

  • Considering your portfolio of programmes
  • Leading through educational change
  • Financial management

Unit 4

Creating academic reputation for your school and self, and leading on healthy performance culture

In Unit 4 we will look at your role and school in the wider context of the university, and ways to lead a healthy performance culture. Topics include:

  • Leading academic reputation
  • Healthy performance culture
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Courageous Conversations

Strategic Projects

As part of the Academic Leadership Development programme you will work on a strategic project in small groups to achieve impact on your educational priorities. You will begin forming these groups and generating ideas at the launch event. Throughout the programme you will be given opportunities to reflect on these projects during sessions and group coaching.
