Programme Directors

This Academic Leadership Development programme is an interactive programme of training, action learning sets and project work, designed specifically for our Programme Directors.

The current cohort for Programme Directors will conclude in September 2024 with the next cohort starting later this year - we will publish the dates once confirmed.

Content Overview

Each unit consists of a day-long session and a half-day workshop. Please scroll down for dates and times for upcoming cohorts.

Unit 1

Understanding your role and our Queen Mary strategy in the HE landscape

In Unit 1 we will cover a range of topics to support you in getting the most from your role as a leader whilst delivering on our shared QM vision. Topics include:

  • Your role as a Programme Director
  • Sector awareness
  • Leading on the ACE approach
  • Programme Design Principles

Unit 2

Growing and applying your personal leadership skills to lead a programme

In Unit 2 we will explore your personal leadership values and style to uncover your strengths and what energises you. We will also cover a range of skills development sessions to support you on your journey. Topics include:

  • Leadership values and the PD role
  • Influencing and communicating
  • Self-awareness
  • Giving and receiving feedback

Unit 3

Delivering your educational leadership vision for your programme

In Unit 3 we will examine the components of programme management and how they may influence the delivery of your leadership vision. Topics include:

  • Aligning your programme
  • Translating strategy into action
  • Financial management

Unit 4

Creating academic reputation for your programme and self, and building a healthy performance culture

In Unit 4 we will look at your role and programme in the wider context of the university, and ways to create a healthy performance culture. Topics include:

  • Academic reputation
  • Working styles and behaviours
  • Strategic partnerships
  • Courageous Conversations

Strategic Projects

As part of the Academic Leadership Development programme you will work on a strategic project in small groups to achieve impact on your educational priorities. You will begin forming these groups and generating ideas at the launch event. Throughout the programme you will be given opportunities to reflect on these projects during sessions and group coaching.
