Christos Sakellaropoulos (Intellectual Property Law LLM, 2022) is just completing his course at CCLS. This is what Christos said about his experience:
“My journey at Queen Mary University of London studying the LLM Intellectual Property Law is surely one that I will cherish for years to come. And now that my studies are slowly drawing to a close, I am delighted to share that I will soon be joining Virtuoso Legal - Intellectual Property Specialists as a Trainee Solicitor in Leeds! Personally, I am extremely interested in the creative and artistic industries such as films, music, and video games, and always on the lookout for new innovations and technologies in these and other sectors. Having come to QMUL, I can safely say that I was able to develop both my personal interests as well as the commercial edge that an LLM at Queen Mary offers. It was ultimately the right choice!
With the wide array of modules offered by the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), the LLM Intellectual Property Law programme definitely met and far exceeded my expectations. My choice of modules ranged from research-led courses in film and video game law to more practical ones, like IP licensing and commercialisation. Even more interesting was the fact that I could develop my knowledge and commercial acumen both in such specific legal areas mentioned and in IP law in general. It was truly remarkable to see my interests taking flesh and bones through my studies and, by extent, influencing my professional development.
If I had one piece of advice to anyone pursuing or looking to pursue an LLM at Queen Mary University of London is to pick what you love. Figure out your interests and passions and set aside your fears and concerns over the ‘right choice’ of modules and programme that will get you that ‘dream’ job. I firmly believe (and hope) that ultimately this is also what employers do- or should seek out in future employees too: to be able to flourish and shine within the boundaries of what they love to do and, ultimately, be themselves. I was set to embark on a different LLM somewhere else, and I hated it. I was not listening to what I truly wanted to do until I discovered the modules on offer at QMUL. It is one thing getting that ‘dream’ job and another if you do not enjoy the process of getting there. Don’t get me wrong, the LLM is a lot of work, but choosing the modules that can make your heart flutter does help to make the process more enjoyable!
I can safely say that, overall, QMUL and the LLM Intellectual Property Law programme made a massive contribution to both my personal and professional development. Having now been employed as a trainee solicitor by Virtuoso Legal, which ranks among the leading and most influential IP specialist law firms in the UK, I can certainly taste the fruits of my personal efforts and time investments at a practical level. Though of course practice is far more different than theory, doing my LLM at QMUL definitely provided me with a competitive professional edge and a lifetime of experiences that I will hardly ever forget.
