Featured research

The Haematology and Artificial Intelligence (HaemAI) lab consists of DERI Academic Fellows Dr Suthesh Sivapalaratnam and Dr Sophie Williams; with additional partners Dr James Aries and Dr Jack Bartram. We are a newly established lab open to ideas and collaborations.

Currently we work on three projects.

  • BloodCounts! makes use of the raw data of the full blood count for early pandemic detection. It is backed by £1M from the Trinity Challenge. Dr Suthesh Sivapalaratnam is the Chief Medical Officer. The main collaborators on this project are Dr Mike Roberts (Statistical Lead) and Dr Nick Gleadall (Bio informatics Lead) both from the University of Cambridge.
  • Algorithmic VITT detection - Dr Sophie Williams leads on near real-time surveillance of  primary and secondary care data feeds for COVID vaccine related thrombosis complications as a model to also study how this could be used to detect other complex disorders.
  • BloodImage! focuses on generating Neuronal Network Analysis for Automated Integrated Blood Film Reporting and Clinical Decision Support. Partners for this Project are the Barts Health and BHRUT labs which process nearly 2 million FBC per year. The adherence population for these labs combined is 3.5 million individuals. This work is led by Dr Suthesh Sivapalaratnam and Prof Slabaugh.

Junior doctors who assist on the projects are listed below.
