ECOM080 - Applied Research Methods

This course is about research design for causal inference.  Students will learn econometric methods used to test economic hypotheses with real-world data.  The course will survey many of the issues currently studied by economists working in the areas of labour, education, health, immigration, crime, urban, political economy and development.  Methodological topics will include selection bias, omitted variables bias, simultaneity, fixed effects, differences in differences, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity, propensity score matching, lab and field experiments, and peer effects.
