Queen Mary University of London, Malta Campus and its medical degree programme have reopened for the new academic year and welcomed 64 new first year students to the historic capital of Gozo. Now in its fourth year of operation on the Islands, the University offers its internationally renowned five-year Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme and is already attracting students from around the world.
Strict health protocols across the spectrum of student, lecturer and staff life provide a Covid-secure environment where students can enjoy their studies as safely as possible, while also being able to experience community life in Gozo and Malta.
Fiona Wilson, Director of Operations at Queen Mary University of London, Malta Campus, said: "During the summer months the whole team at Queen Mary, both in Malta and in London, have worked tirelessly to ensure that our Malta Campus is ready to greet both returning students and the new intake of medical doctor and surgeon students in a safe way to minimise risk to the community, while keeping essential education open."
"All students are required to travel with a negative Covid-19 test from their home country, and will then undergo further Covid testing after they have arrived in Malta. Queen Mary’s top priority is to make sure that our students have a safe, high-quality learning experience, and for student life to continue as normally as possible."
"The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on almost every aspect of society, so we have continued to support Gozo General Hospital (GGH) and the local community during the pandemic by providing additional capacity at the Malta Campus. GGH took over the Queen Mary, Malta Campus building at the start of the Covid-19 crisis, and we have worked to be flexible in allowing them to stay alongside us while they refurbish some of their own facilities."
As well as following the Maltese Health Authorities’ advice on physical distancing, use of face coverings and use of hand sanitiser, Queen Mary follows a Covid Code which sets out the behaviours we should show towards each other when on campus.
Queen Mary, Malta Campus combines a London curriculum with a Mediterranean lifestyle, and this approach has been rewarded with students arriving from locations including the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, the Isle of Man, France, Spain and Cyprus. There are now students from six continents and 42 nationalities on campus among the 178 strong student body. During the first few months of the new term, students will experience a 'blended' educational model combining in-person and online learning.
As part of the student and staff commitment to the Gozo community, the Malta Campus has an exciting programme of virtual and outreach events over the coming year.
The first of these was a partnership with Mental Health Association Gozo; a virtual conference entitled “Mental Wellness in Covid Times” which took place online on 23 October 2020. The conference featured presentations from experts, patients and a keynote address by President Emeritus H.E. Marie- Louise Coleiro Preca.
