Modules in Academic and Professional Communication

Offered by the Language Centre and free to all students across all academic disciplines

The Language Centre offers 5-week and 10-week Academic and Professional Communication Modules in both semester 1 and semester 2 that cover the academic skills you need to do well in your assignments, from reading and writing critically to giving effective presentations. These classes start in week 2 of each semester.

Being new to university and understanding assignments can be challenging. Our classes are designed for both home and international students to help you unpack the skills you need and give you more confidence in your academic work. We deliver courses to help you professionally too.

Watch the below video to see the kinds of skills you need for university study and how the Language Centre can help. Visit our website to further explore the list of modules and find what best suits you.

To get a taste of what we offer, here are some of our modules.

First year students are often surprised at how much work at university involves self-study. If you struggle to stay motivated or are unsure about how to approach coursework, why not sign up to this 5-week module on Active Learning with Digital Tools?

Once you feel more confident with your academic skills, you can join one of our employment-centred modules which are designed to help you increase your professional communication skills in a global world. The below videos will give you a taste of what happens in some of our 5-week courses.

Storytelling for Success in the Workplace - learn the secrets of storytelling to enliven your presentations, shape your own online digital narrative and stand out at job interviews.

Intercultural Communication for the Global Workplace – learn the skills needed to operate effectively in cross-cultural environments in terms of both verbal and non-verbal communication.

See our QM Elevate page for more information on what is on offer and find out how you can book your place.

Finally, watch our videos on Adjusting to UK Study where you will learn from international students about what it is like to study in a UK university. Find out more about the different terminology (eg what in the world is a convener?) and understand why a mark of 65% actually means you are doing well.
