The Peace Process - Layers of Meaning project is offering an oral history and social enquiry training opportunity.
The Peace Process project is an EU (Peace III) funded project and we are inviting applications from Queen Mary, University of London staff and graduate students for a limited number of places on a three-part course in oral history and social enquiry interviewing. Other participants will be staff and students from Trinity College Dublin and Dundalk Institute of Technology, as well as community members from the Northern Ireland/ Republic of Ireland border region. Travel and subsistence expenses will be met and a certificate of participation will be given to all who complete the course and supporting work.
The course provides an opportunity to work alongside others in a milieu influenced by post-conflict issues and creates opportunities for social enquiry projects to be undertaken on a cross-community basis. The modules are throughout sensitive to current social concerns and intended to support positive inter-community relations.
The training (including interview integrity procedures, processing and storing, styles and techniques, as well as all relevant technical matters) will set out all necessary legal, ethical and professional standards, and demonstrate how they may be embodied in practical work. At all points the approach will to be supportive and positive. This is a highly transferable set of skills, readily adaptable to enquiry across a wide range of disciplines and vocational activity.
Places are limited, and in making our selection we will seek to draw bring together a range of academic interests and to balance community and educational/occupational backgrounds. Those accepted for training must undertake to engage in all three segments of the course.
The first part of the training will be held in London and will be centred on Queen Mary, University of London.
Deepening understanding of the complexity of both British and Irish identities has been at the heart of the Peace Process. Field trips will develop the theme of London in conflict and will include, for example, a guided visit to the Imperial War Museum and to Toynbee Hall, a world-renowned pioneer in the identification and resolution of community stresses and conflicts.
