The Energy Law Institute is pleased to announce it's third Friday Lecture Series on the 13th March 2020. The lecture will discuss 'International Nuclear Law' and delivered by Stephen Tromans QC, barrister specializing in Energy and Environmental Law.

Abstract

The law governing nuclear energy has many unique features which reflect the nature and special features of nuclear fission as a source on energy. From the inception of nuclear energy, states have enacted special laws to control and manage to risks presented by the technology. This now reflected in the many international conventions which deal with issues such as safety, security, non-proliferation, accidents and their consequences, waste management, liability and insurance. Having provided an overview of these topics the lecture will look at the role of nuclear energy in a world transitioning away from carbon-based economies, its geopolitical significance, and public attitudes to nuclear risks in the light of major accidents such as Chernobyl and Fukushima.
