Studying Abroad? Here's What Happens to Your Credits and Grades

Marking/grading schemes used at partner institutions are different from those used at Queen Mary. When you complete your studies at a partner university, you have to share your transcript of records with the Global Partnerships and Opportunities team, who will then liaise with Queen Mary’ Registry Service to get your semester/year abroad onto your HEAR. How your results appear on your academic record depends on your programme and the length of your exchange.

Failure to complete the required credit load may result in failure of the exchange period abroad.

Will My Exchange Count Towards My Degree?

Yes, module results from a semester/year abroad count towards your Queen Mary programme.

Students on a Year Abroad Degree Programme

For full-year exchanges, the year abroad is credit-bearing. Students must enrol on a full courseload at the host institution and pass a minimum of 90 out of 120 equivalent Queen Mary credits in order to be awarded the degree ‘with a year abroad,’ yet the results do not affect degree classification (the year abroad being zero-weighted).

Your results will be assessed to confirm you have passed the required modules/credits
If you failed, the ‘year abroad’ will be removed from your degree programme entirely
If you passed, the year abroad is recorded as a pass block of credit. This may then look like this:

Students Taking an Optional Semester Abroad

For optional semester exchanges, the converted results of the full courseload and 100% of the credits count towards the student’s degree classification according to the weighting of the academic year during which the exchange takes places.

If you undertake a single semester abroad as part of a three-year degree:

Your results are converted to an overall average
The average mark will appear on your Queen Mary record
The exchange period contributes towards your degree classification
