Summary: Feminist interventions in art history today owe much to Linda Nochlin (1931-2017), whose essay 'Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?' caused a stir when it was published in 1971. This book retraces the life and intellectual career of the American art historian. By combining art history and gender studies, it shows that her work can be read as an enthusiastic and constant commitment to the cause of marginalised groups. A commitment that was not only a founding principle and driving force behind Linda Nochlin's research, but also a liberating force that enabled her to revolutionise her discipline.
