Support

The Department is committed to ensuring that you thrive academically and personally while you are studying with us. There are a variety of forms of support available to students, including:

Pastoral Support

When you begin your degree programme you will be assigned a personal advisor. This will be a member of the academic staff, whom you will meet on your first day at university and remain in regular contact with throughout your degree. Your advisor will give you the information you need to settle in at the start of your studies, as well as guidance on module options in the second and third years. They will monitor your progress in all your modules, and provide regular reports on how you are getting on. Should you experience any problems during your time at Queen Mary, your advisor is a familiar face who can help you to sort things out. They are your first point of contact if you have any problems, and they can refer you to the comprehensive range of student support services at Queen Mary, such as the Advice and Counselling Service, Careers, and Disability and Dyslexia.

The School of English and Drama also has a team of administrators, including a dedicated Student Support Manager who can provide day to day help and advice on a wide range of topics.

PASS: Peer Assisted Study Sessions

PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) is a global scheme that aims to provide support for first year university students. The English Department successfully piloted the scheme in 2012, and now more than 12 departments at Queen Mary are involved with the scheme. The Department's scheme has three mains aims:

  • To help mix the three years and have more communication between the year groups
  • To pass on the academic knowledge of second and third year students to those in the first year
  • To create a friendly pastoral feeling throughout the department, so that questions on topics such as housing and jobs can be asked in a neutral environment

For details of Queen Mary's involvement in the scheme, see the PASS page.

Learning Development

During your time at Queen Mary, you can access a range of learning development activities and resources to support you. These include a range of Communication, Language and Study Guidance, including one-to-one tutorials, drop in sessions, online resources, as well as a chance to talk to our Royal Literary Fund fellows, all published writers. The University’s partnership with the Royal Literary Fund means that we are able to provide one-to-one tuition for students who wish to improve their writing. Whether you have a particular issue that’s causing concern, or you simply want to improve your written style, help is available. Find out much more on the Learning Development website.
