Grounded in London’s East End, our Department of English has been long dedicated to the broadest and most inclusive vision of English Studies. We span cultures and periods, encompass literary studies and creative writing, and range across media platforms. We create an environment where global perspectives and the relationship between literature and the wider world are emphasised.
We are one of the largest English departments in London, with over 40 members of academic staff, and around 850 students. Our staff have expertise across the range of English studies, from the classical to the ultra-contemporary, and in literature from across the world; and we have an international reputation for our pioneering interdisciplinary work.
The Department offers a range of qualifications including single and joint honours BA programmes, and postgraduate degrees at Masters and PhD level. All our students benefit from creative, research-led teaching by people who are passionately engaged with their subject. All study takes place on our Mile End campus, located alongside the leafy Regent’s Canal, 15 minutes away from central London.
