Profile

Dr John Paul Cauchi is a Senior lecturer in Public Health, and Head of Public Health at Queen Mary University of London, Malta Campus. His expertise and interests lie in environmental health, especially in the intersection of climate change, food security and health.

Dr Cauchi’s focuses on climate change and health topics, with a growing interest in indigenous health systems in relation to food systems and climate resilience. He is a member of IPON, the Indigenous People’s Observatory Network, with academics from over 15 countries. IPON is a network of Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers, decision-makers, NGOs, International Organizations representatives, Indigenous representatives, and community members who recognised that Indigenous peoples, knowledge, and practices underpin resilience across the food-climate-health nexus. Dr Cauchi carried out my doctoral research in Australia, exploring the intersection of climate change, food security and health in the Pacific Island nation of Kiribati. His interests also extend to other environmental health topics, including the impact of air pollution on human health and the effect of temperature on health. Over the years, Dr Cauchi also gained experience building Malta’s severe acute respiratory illness (SARI)  surveillance system, providing him with experience in surveillance systems, coding and digitisation of health data.

Dr Cauchi is also vocally active with several NGOs in Malta that focus on social justice and environmental matters.  He loves hiking, swimming, listening to podcasts and music.
