Profile

Dr Gianluca Farrugia is a senior lecturer in Basic Medical Sciences and Deputy Head of student selected components (SSCs) at Queen Mary University London, Malta campus. 

Dr Farrugia obtained his first honours degree in Biology and Chemistry at the University of Malta’s Faculty of Science, after which he spent two and a half years working in the pharmaceutical industry as a laboratory quality control analyst. In 2013, he obtained a doctorate in Physiology and Biochemistry at the University of Malta’s Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, where he spent another eight years as a post-doctoral researcher studying oxidative stress, programmed cell death and amyloidogenic proteins, as well as molecular mechanisms underlying the cancer-preventive effects of aspirin. Dr Farrugia’s research interests include oxidative stress, mitochondria, mitochondrial dysfunction, amyloid diseases and the gut microbiome.

Dr Farrugia also has considerable experience in student and youth support, given his earlier role as a volunteer for online youth support service provider Kellimni.com. He loves teaching, reading, writing, drawing and Gozo.
