About the space

The Graduate Study Space on the 7th floor of the Graduate Centre, Mile End Campus, comprises four study spaces designed for the use of taught and research postgraduate students. The space is open 24/7 throughout the year.

The 7th floor is comprised of:

Postgraduate Reading Room

Group Study Rooms 1 and 2 (GC705 and GC706, respectively)

Postgraduate Common Room and Terrace

In addition, a kitchen is available, along with gender neutral toilet facilities.

The primary function of all four rooms is to provide a range of study environments for postgraduate students; some of the spaces are bookable for other activities (the Common Room is bookable for certain events where these support the study or development of postgraduate students, for example), though these are kept to a minimum to reduce disruption to the normal access and use of the spaces.

Food policy

During normal study use in all rooms, cold snacks, covered hot drinks and bottled cold drinks are permitted; please be mindful of other users of the space by clearing rubbish and food/drinks spills immediately.

Hot food may only be consumed in the kitchen.

Accessing the 7th floor in the evening and at weekends

After 6pm and before 8am on weekdays, and all day at weekends, entry to the Graduate Centre is via the accessible door to the left of the revolving doors by scanning your QMUL ID card.  Access to the 7th floor study rooms remains the same as for daytime use.

The Postgraduate Reading Room provides 24 individual study desks; the space is intended for quiet individual study only and noise should be kept to a minimum. Desks are booked via the booking system.

Similar study spaces are currently not available in the Postgraduate Taught Reading Room and Research Reading Room on the 2nd floor of the Mile End Library due to refurbishment works. Please use alternative study spaces in the Temporary Building.

Food policy

Cold snacks, covered hot drinks and bottled cold drinks are permitted; please be mindful of other users of the space by clearing rubbish and food/drinks spills immediately.

Hot food may only be consumed in the kitchen.

Group study rooms 1 and 2 are designed for group working, there are spaces for a maximum of eight people in each room, and the rooms are supplied with AV (digital screen, with cables provided for laptop use) as well as whiteboards. Access to the rooms is controlled by university ID card and restricted to postgraduate taught and research students.  Group study rooms can be booked, at present this is by direct request to Library Services; rooms can only be booked by following the booking procedure below.

Booking a group study room – who can book?

Taught or research postgraduate students; staff can book the space where this directly relates to taught or postgraduate student activities.  The rooms are not bookable for staff meetings or undergraduate activities.

How to book

Bookings are for a maximum of 4 hours per group, and require a minimum of 24 hours’ notice Monday – Friday, or 48-72 hours for bookings at the weekend. In the first instance, contact library-environment@qmul.ac.uk.

The Postgraduate Common Room and Terrace provides comfortable relaxed seating for individual and social study; the adjacent kitchen is equipped with high top tables and a microwave.  Booking for events is available where this supports postgraduate students via networking or learning activities, or for events managed through the Events Team on behalf of the Principal's Office.

The terrace is closed during normal daytime use of the Common Room unless through specific arrangement with the Library (for example during booked events), and where the use is supervised.  This is the result of a series if incidents, and an identified risk to personal safety.
