Law - Databases

Databases are excellent sources of good quality information. These are the most useful databases of English law:

• BAILII: Freely available British and Irish public legal information.
• Economist: QMUL users now need to register an account and verify their QMUL email in order to access the QMUL Library Services' subscription to the Economist.  This only has to be done once and can be done on or off campus.  Users register and create a username and password using their QMUL email at https://myaccount.economist.com/s/login/SelfRegister. Users will then be sent a confirmation email to verify their QMUL affiliation.  Once registered, users can access The Economist using their registered username and password at https://www.economist.com 
• HeinOnline: Is a legal database providing a substantial collection of US and international legal research materials in an online, fully searchable and image-based format. This means that all of the images of the documents in PDF format are just as they appear in the original print.
• i-law.com: Access to 27 titles including International Construction Law Review and Lloyds Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly.  *Requires additional authentication to access.  Input your QMUL email address to authenticate.*
• Index to Legal Periodicals and Books: Provides access to journal articles, court decisions, legislation, books, book reviews and more. Full text is available for over 400 journals.
• Investor-State LawGuide: Enables a methodical approach when researching investment treaty arbitration jurisprudence and provides an efficient means to improve the comprehensiveness of research.
• JustisOne: is now vLex Justis (see below)
• Kluwer Arbitration: Provides access to the full text of primary and secondary materials in the field of international commercial arbitration.
• The Lawyer: a key magazine for the legal profession, covering a wide range of practice areas, careers information, job opportunities and more.  In order to access the premium content paid for by QMUL, users will need to create a registered user account. • Law Trove: Law Trove contains about 200 law titles, all offering excellent functionality and features that will enhance your students’ learning experience. Law Trove enables you to search and interrogate the wealth of Oxford’s textbook law list. Sign in using institutional login option to get full access. 'User guide' and 'getting started guide' available. 
• Lexis: Full-text law database covering thousands of reported and unreported cases from the following jurisdictions: England & Wales, 1900-; Scotland, 1944-; Northern Ireland, 1945-; European Court of Justice, all cases. Also includes the full text of all in-force UK and EU legislation, and the full text of 50 UK law journals, over 700 US law journals, 25 Canadian law journals and 12 Australian law journals.  LexisNexis also provide a free online Glossary of legal terms.
• Lexology: Access international legal updates, analysis and insights through daily published articles from worldwide law firms and service providers in 25 languages. Need to register to access content.  
• Mass Observation Online: Makes available the complete archives of the pioneering social research organisation Mass Observation. There are original manuscript and typescript papers, published reports and photographs, and interactive features.
• The Oxford English Dictionary: Features 600,000 words, 3 million quotations, and over 1000 years of English.
• Oxford Scholarship Online - Law: Full-text access to Oxford University Press scholarship in law and other disciplines.
• Practical Law: Allows you to browse key resources and view the latest legal updates in a wide range of practice areas. For best user experience, make sure you’re signed in: click on 'Sign in' and then select 'Access through academic institution'.  Next select QMUL from the drop-down list. This will take you through to the QMUL ITS login screen. Sign in using your QMUL ITS login details.
• vLex Justis: Over one million full-text cases, as well as legislation, dockets, books, journals, news and more.
• Westlaw: Full-text database of UK, EU and US legal materials. New Platform.  Westlaw content via a new look, more user-friendly, more personalised platform.  For best user experience, make sure you’re signed in: click on 'Sign in' and then select 'Access through academic institution'.  Next select QMUL from the drop-down list. This will take you through to the QMUL ITS login screen. You only need your QMUL ITS login details. 

Other useful databases:

• Academic Video Online – a comprehensive video subscription that includes over 70,000 titles spanning the widest range of subject areas including anthropology, business, counselling, film, health, history, music..etc.
• The Art Newspaper is a monthly print publication based in London and New York, covering news of the visual arts as they are affected by international politics and economics, developments in law, tax, the art market, the environment and official cultural policy. See Username and password detail.
• Box of Broadcasts (BOB): Innovative shared online off-air TV and radio recording service for UK higher and further education institutions. Choose and record any broadcast programme from 60+ TV and radio channels, schedule recordings in advance, edit programmes into clips, create playlists, embed clips into VLEs, share what you are watching with others and search a growing archive of material. • Business Source Complete: Full text coverage for more than 1800 peer-reviewed business and economics journals. In addition, this database offers indexing and abstracts for many more journals, plus 17,000 detailed profiles of the world's largest companies.
• The Economist is subscribed by Queen Mary. Please ignore the Subscribe button. If encountering problem accessing it off campus, please use the proxy URL:   www.economist.com.ezproxy.library.qmul.ac.uk  
• The Financial Times: Individual registration required. QM login required off-campus in order to register.
• JSTOR: Provides access to the full text of some core journals for law.
• Gale Primary Sources and Digital Scholar Lab:  is a humanities and social sciences digital primary sources archive that allows you to use a single cross- search interface to access 500 years of world history in multiple collections. Platform that combines access to a wide range of primary sources - Daily Mail Historical Archive, Financial Times Historical Archive, International Herald Tribune Historical Archive, Chatham House Online Archives, The Economist Historical Archive and more - with the Digital Scholar Lab which equips students and scholars with text and data mining resources, visualization tools, and methodology suggestions. Tutorials and Support
• Nexis UK: Provides access to regional, national and global newspapers, worldwide financial and company information, market research data, and country information, including the BBC monitoring service. Video Tutorials
• Open Book Publishers is a UK HSS publisher which enables you to access an openly available list of Open Educational Resources (OER) which includes books and textbooks for free. 
• Oxford Reference: An online resource that brings together two million digitized entries from OUP's Dictionaries, Companions andEncyclopedias. Good for checking a fact or finding key information on a person, concept or term.
• ProQuest Dissertations & Theses: Search for dissertations and theses from across the world. [Senate House Library]
• SAGE Research Methods: A database dedicated to research methods across a range of subject areas. SAGE Research Methods supports research at all levels by providing material to guide users through every step of the research process, from writing a research question, conducting a literature review, choosing the best research methods, analysing data, to writing up results and thinking about publication.
• Scopus: A multidisciplinary database containing the citations and abstracts of peer-reviewed literature. This database lists the number of times a work has been cited in other works and provides direct links to the abstracts of citing works. • Statista: Provides statistical data from a wide range of international sources on populations, industries, economics, media, public opinion, companies, politics, lifestyles, and many other topics. Video Tutorial
• Telegraph Historical Archive, 1855-2000 which includes the Sunday edition - allows you to search historical data on any number of topics, and offers insight into domestic and international affairs and culture over a timespan of almost 150 years.  Tutorials and Support
• The Times Digital Archive: 1785-2012 (and rolling) provides access to a library of back issues of the newspaper online plus searchable images from the microfilm collection of The Times.
• The Times Literary Supplement Historical Archive: 1902-2014 offers insight, criticism, and commentary on literature and the arts from over a century.
• Web of Science: A multidisciplinary database containing the citations and abstracts of peer-reviewed literature. This database lists the number of times a work has been cited in other works and provides direct links to the abstracts of citing works.
