Profile

Dr. Thomas J. Farkas works as a Principal Associate in the Commercial practice group and IP team at Eversheds Sutherland in Munich.

His advisory activities particularly comprise all matters in and out of court in the area of trademark, design, copyright and competition law. Among his clients are, for example, commercial enterprises, manufacturers of consumer and luxury goods, providers of financial services, advertising agencies as well as technology companies.

Thomas is a member of the German Association for Industrial Property and Copyright (Deutsche Vereinigung für gewerblichen Rechtsschutz und Urheberrecht, GRUR). Since 2012 he has been a visiting lecturer at Queen Mary University of London and has been giving lectures on current topics in the IP area. In addition, he is a lecturer at AMD Academy of Fashion and Design (AMD Akademie für Mode und Design) in the area of trademark, design and advertising law. At the National University of Colombia (Universidad Nacional de Colombia) in Bogota, Colombia, he is a regular visiting lecturer of the International Summer School and holds lectures on international developments in the IP area. Thomas regularly publishes expert articles on IP-relevant topics.

Before he joined Eversheds Sutherland, Thomas worked in a renowned law firm in Berlin an in and international law firm in Munich in the IP area. In addition, he was responsible for the IP area in an internationally leading fashion company. He studied law at Humboldt University of Berlin, Queen Mary University of London (LL.M. in IP Law) and completed a research project at the Institute of Intellectual Property in Tokyo, Japan. As a scholarship holder at Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, he obtained his Ph.D. on the topic of imitation protection and overlapping of protective rights.
