Greece and Italy in court for criminalizing migrants and humanitarian aid

An international group of lawyers has filed complaints against Greece and Italy at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg to denounce the criminalization of humanitarian aid and to protect migrants and human rights defenders.

Speaking to Lusa, Violeta Moreno-Lax, a member of the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN), explained that the organization uses innovative legal strategies, including bringing complaints to European courts to "report violations of human rights" in a number of areas, including violence against migrants and the criminalization of humanitarian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the Mediterranean. “We have supported NGOs like Sea Watch in actions against Italy,” said the legal consultant.
