Title: Mapping migration and more - data analysis and visualisation for the Greater London Authority

Abstract:
The Greater London Authority is the strategic regional authority for London, with powers over transport, policing, economic development, and fire and emergency planning. The GLA’s City Intelligence Unit (CIU) provides current Mayor Sadiq Khan and the GLA with evidence and analysis which enable the formulation of policy and strategy in London. In this talk, Veronica will describe some of the projects she has worked on since joining the CIU’s Demography and Policy Analysis team in 2021. These include analysis of population change in London during the COVID-19 pandemic, creation of a migration statistics data hub for use by local authorities, and exploring the demographic drivers behind schools in some Inner London boroughs needing to merge or close due to insufficient pupils.

Biography: Veronica is public health nutritionist who gained a Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1994; has worked overseas for UNICEF and Save the Children; was a consultant for varied United Nations and non-governmental organisations and a lecturer in statistics and research methods at the University of Westminster. She studied part-time at City University on the Data Science MSc, and since graduating in 2021 has worked as a researcher and statistical analyst at the Greater London Authority.
