There are three schemes through which visiting scholars can come and spend time in the School of English and Drama at QMUL.
- QMUL Distinguished Visiting Fellows
- School of English and Drama Visiting Scholars
- Visiting PhD Students
We invite prospective applicants to make their initial enquiry by completing the Visiting PhD Enquiry Form 2020 [DOC 38KB] and emailing it to the Director of Graduate Studies, Professor David Duff (firstname.lastname@example.org), who will discuss the suitability of your project, answer any queries you might have, and advise you on making a formal application.
Visiting PhD students are charged a nominal fee of £100 per month towards costs to the University (payable prior to arrival; in exceptional circumstances, this fee may be adjusted or waived).
The School of English and Drama welcomes academics as part of QMUL’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Distinguished Visiting Fellows Scheme. Recent and forthcoming Distinguished Visiting Fellows include: in Drama, Martin Harries (University of California, Irvine), Tavia Nyong’o (New York University), Shannon Jackson (UC Berkeley), and Erin Hurley (McGill University); in English, Rita Barnard (University of Pennsylvania), Timothy Brook (University of British Columbia), Lisa Gitelman (New York University), Daniel Vitkus (UC San Diego), Line Cottegnies (Sorbonne Nouvelle), and Patricia Seed (UC Irvine). The scheme provides free on-campus accommodation for a period of between one and three weeks. Fellows on this scheme are expected to present research in the Department of English and/or Drama and to contribute to PhD training.
If you are interested in applying to this scheme, please contact a colleague with shared research interests in the School plus the Director of Research for Drama (Professor Nicholas Ridout) or English (Professor Scott McCracken) and SED’s Research and Graduate Studies Manager.
The School of English and Drama (SED) at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) invites suitably qualified postdoctoral scholars to visit us as Visiting Scholars for a period of one to six months.
Visiting Scholars may be assigned a mentor with whom they can meet to discuss their project (though not for formal supervision). Visiting Scholars have access to libraries at QMUL and to the University of London’s Senate House Library, as well as to College networks and relevant buildings. By normal application procedures, Visiting Scholars can also use other London resources such as those at the British Library. Visiting Scholars are encouraged to participate in the research culture at QMUL and in London by attending seminars in the Departments of English and Drama and elsewhere in the College, at the University of London, and beyond. The School has hosted Visiting Scholars from a number of countries including the USA, Brazil, France, and Canada.
Prospective Visiting Scholars should submit the following to SED’s Research and Graduate Studies Manager:
- an up-to-date CV (in English; maximum 15 pages)
- a statement of their plans for research while at QMUL (maximum three pages)
- a short application form available here [DOC 18KB].
There is a fee of £100 per month that goes towards costs to the University (in extraordinary circumstances, this may be adjusted; payable prior to arrival). Due to pressures on space, we cannot offer office or desk space within the School; we also cannot offer administrative support. Ideally, please submit your application six months before you propose to come to QMUL SED. We look forward to hearing from you.
