Why did you choose to pursue BSc Pure Mathematics and what do you enjoy about your degree?

I chose to pursue BSc Pure Mathematics as I found myself very much interested in the theory and reasoning behind certain processes as well as the more algebraic side of mathematics. The best part about the degree is that I am not limited to the Pure Mathematics modules, but I am still able to choose one or two modules from different subjects I am interested in. I enjoy learning the theory and being able to apply it to everyday's life. Being able to work through a problem and receiving such a satisfying solution is a great feeling.

What’s your overall experience as a committee member of the Maths Society?

Being a committee member of the Maths Society for two years was a great experience. I learned so many new skills and found myself using those skills in other aspects of my life. When hearing "Maths Society" people often get the idea that it’s going to be a very academic society, however, whilst there are academic lectures, a lot of events are also social events and career-based events which really helped people, especially freshers, make friends that they shared at least one thing in common with. It was a wonderful opportunity to network with external people from different companies as well as getting to know the University’s maths department.

What is the best thing about studying at Queen Mary?

The best thing about Queen Mary is its inclusivity towards commuters. Being a commuter myself, I was never able to stay at University too late, however, so many events, both social and academic, allowed me to still feel part of the University and be able to join in and enjoy myself. The University also made it really easy to find people with common interests thanks to various societies.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future involve becoming a Maths teacher at Secondary School. I have always been intrigued by the profession and am so excited to start working with children and passing on all the skills I have developed at University. Queen Mary has helped me with my applications and also with the transition from being a student to becoming a working professional. The careers department, alongside many lecturers and professors, are so helpful in making sure that you are the best version of yourself and that this is portrayed effectively in all your applications.
