Queen Victoria attended the ceremony and announced:
“It gave her great satisfaction to open this fine building provided for the benefit of the people of East London, whose lives of unceasing toil will be cheered by the various opportunities of rational and instructive entertainment, and of artistic enjoyment here afforded to them”.
