Queen Mary LLM student to present at an International Atomic Energy Agency conference

Queen Mary University of London is pleased to share that Leneka Rhoden, a current Energy and Climate Change Law LLM student, has been selected to present at the International Conference on Stakeholder Engagement for Nuclear Power Programmes, hosted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The event will take place in Vienna, Austria, 26-30 May 2025.

Leneka’s presentation will form part of the conference’s Flash Talk session and is based on her research titled "Regulatory Frameworks to Scale Nuclear for Decarbonization: A Comparative Study of the United States and Canada." Her work explores the regulatory approaches of both countries and identifies the key features that creates a bankable ecosystem for nuclear. The research is timely as there is an ongoing nuclear renaissance and many countries are looking for useful lessons to scale and accelerate the growth of nuclear as part of their climate and energy strategy.

The IAEA conference seeks to bring together policymakers, regulators, academics and industry leaders from around the world. It will cover a wide range of topics such as nuclear safety, decommissioning, public trust, stakeholder communication and sustainability.

Given the increasing interest in nuclear power as a low-carbon energy source, end-users will also be engaged and the event will play an important role in helping countries build the foundations needed for effective, inclusive and safe implementation.

Leneka is currently completing an internship with the World Nuclear Association, where she examines nuclear’s interaction with international policy frameworks and access to climate finance. She is also an IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow and a recipient of the Chevening Scholarship.
