The European Intellectual Property Institutes Network (EIPIN) Congress 2012, which concerned the interface of intellectual property and imitation across a variety of topics, concluded on 22 April 2012.

Speakers, partners and students from the four EIPIN partner institutions (Alicante, Munich, Strasbourg and London) were welcomed by Professor Morag Shiach, Vice Principal of Queen Mary, University of London, Professor Guido Westkamp as coordinator and Professor Spyros Maniatis, Director of the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary.

Forty students from the EIPIN partner organisations had the opportunity to ask a stellar cast of international experts questions on such topics such as the role of competition law and the notion of secondary markets, issues concerning copyright and access rights in computer programs, the degree of freedom provided by relevant doctrines in patent law and trade mark, as well as the impact of freedom of speech concerns on scientific uses, the regulation of creativity as regards "mash ups", the protection of personality rights, the notion of commercial freedom of speech and the protection of dramatic works as regards the underscoring notion of imitation as a discreet and emerging concern in modern intellectual property law.

Speakers included:

  • Professor Stefan Bechtold (ETH Zurich)
  • Professor Maher Dabbah (Queen Mary, University of London)
  • Professor Thomas Hoeren (Münster)
  • Professor Horst-Peter Götting (Dresden)
