QMIPRI Open Seminar on Open Access to Scientific Publishing

Date: 26 January 2022

About the event

Open access to scientific publishing is expanding quite rapidly in all academic areas, and it is changing the traditional model of scholarly communication. However, the transition towards open access is complex, as the interaction between the main stakeholders - research funders, authors, publishers, and university libraries- gets into conflicts of interest.

The UK has accelerated the pace to open access beyond average in Europe, and Professor Asunción Esteve has analysed the transition to open access in the UK from the perspective of the different stakeholders. In this seminar, she will expose the legal problems of open access mandates by funders to academic staff of universities, the remodelling of publishing agreements between publishers and authors, and the challenges that the new “read and publish” agreements pose to the future of publishers’ business.
