Widening Epistemic Communities and Addressing Societal Challenges: Delivering New Approaches to Governance, Information and Intellectual Property?

When: Wednesday, October 25, 2023, 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM
Where: Room 2.2, Centre For Commercial Law Studies 67-69 Lincoln's Inn Fields London WC2A

Speaker: Professor Abbe E. L. Brown

Intellectual property and information can have a significant impact on societal challenges; yet regimes created to address challenges (such as health, biodiversity and energy) engage with legal regimes relating to IP and information in a variety of ways – from undue deference to overly proactive intervention. This research forms part of a wider project exploring how to bring about an intertwined, holistic, plural and adaptable approach to formal regime creation. After exploring the problem and the arguments for such an approach, this paper will begin an exploration of how this might actually be done at a practical level.

Professor Abbe E. L. Brown, is Chair in Intellectual Property Law at the University of Aberdeen. Abbe is a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nation and the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative, a Senior Expert with the NERC Constructing a Digital Environment Programme and the Chair of the British and Irish Law, Education and Technology Association. She is presently part of projects funded by UKRI/EU Horizon (Marbles and Blueremediomics), the Royal Society of Edinburgh (Oceans and Us) and the Academy of Finland (TIPU). Abbe is admitted to practice as a solicitor in England and Wales, Victoria (Australia) and Scotland. In October 2023 Abbe is a Visiting Scholar at Queen Mary.
