Santiago Theoduloz is a qualified lawyer from Uruguay and graduated with his LLM in 2017. He is currently an associate lawyer at the internationally renowned law firm Guyer & Regules in Uruguay, the Vice- President of the Graduates of British Universities Associations of Uruguay, Assistant Professor at the University of the Republic in Uruguay (Universidad de la República) and a Partner at the Bloomsbury Policy Group.
I was determined to study my Master’s degree in the United Kingdom. Considering my profile and expectations I researched all the options that were available, and I was impressed by the LLM offering from CCLS. I wasn’t just impressed with the variety of subjects offered, but also with the reputation of the School of International Arbitration (which is one of the best places in Europe to study arbitration). Also, the reputation of the academics and the whole CCLS team made it a really attractive prospect, and after completing my course, I can confirm that I made the right choice.
I have amazing memories from my time at CCLS. If I have to choose just one (though it is a difficult choice), it is the welcome weekend at Cumberland Lodge. The opportunity to spend a weekend in a residence within Windsor Great Park, and to share that experience more than a hundred colleagues, was astonishing. The weekend offered the chance to visualize how amazing the upcoming year was going to be and I found that invaluable.
What does being a member of the CCLS community mean to you?It means at first a responsibility and a great sense of being proud about the institute I feel part of. I had the opportunity of learning from the best and also to share my own views. Now, as an Alumnus and as a QMUL Ambassador in Uruguay the opportunity of sharing my experience here is a great challenge that makes me feel honoured.
CCLS contribute to my career hugely and in many different ways. I was able to learn from the best and also share opportunities not only with the CCLS community but also with the amazing network that surrounds CCLS. My colleagues from CCLS are also incredible people who I now consider my friends and they represent a great community that has helped me to improve my current work.
The way in which the LLM programme is prepared – the way in which every detail is taken care of, the location of CCLS at the heart of Legal London and the overall learning environment are all among my reasons for saying that the experience at CCLS was challenging, awesome and unique with a clear contribution to my current position.
Because CCLS is a place where you can find what you are looking for and that will help you to develop your career and future plans. If you are thinking about a career in arbitration this is – without doubt- the place. If you are thinking about a place that helps you get to know incredible people from all over the world, this is also the place. You will have no regrets as this will be an invaluable opportunity.
I divided my LLM into arbitration and commercial law subjects. I signed up to the modules in International Commercial Arbitration, Investment Arbitration (Substantive Protection), International Arbitration and Energy, International Commercial Law, Corporate Rescue and Cross-Border Insolvency.
I also took both courses about Critical Thinking and Writing in Law that were really important in improving my work on the other modules. My final dissertation was about Third-Party Funding and Conflict of Interest -a current hot topic in the arbitration world.
